Miyata Frontier - What can you tell me?
I was looking for an older bike to clean up, restore a bit and use as a commuter.
I found a Miyata Frontier at Goodwill for $8. After I cleaned it, everything seemed to be in good shape and may need only slight adjustments. I'm going for a short ride on Sunday to test it out and see if anything fails to work. It has minimal rust on the crank shaft, but none anywhere else. The brake pads appear to be pretty new. The tires hold air, but seem to be corroding on the sides. Can anyone tell me about this bike model? And, in general, what kind of things should I look for when converting this to a reliable commuter?
Here are the specs as I read them off the bike:
Brakes and brake levers - Dia-Compe Drop Forge
Tires - MYT Racer (High Pressure) K6302 JIS 2914
Gear levers, crankshaft, derailers - Suntour 7-GT
Handlebars - Special "SR" logo Sakae
Rims Araya 27x1-1/4 - 1-3/8 w/o
Seat - Serfus Tailbones
Fork - High-Tensile Complete Fork 1024
Serial # - had a sticker with "B" on it then F269652 then another sticker with "D"
Thanks for any help anybody can offer. This is my first restore project, so I am hoping to learn a lot. I've always had my bikes worked on in bike shops, but I want to learn to do it myself.

OK, the main thing I'll say is that you have steel rims, which provide a horrible braking surface, especially when wet. So, until you replace them (if you like the bike, you really should), look around at your local bike shop (LBS) for "Kool Stop" brake pads in the "Salmon" (orange-ish) color. They're very good in rain. Sounds like a good beater/commuter, though.
