It has always been my assumption, albeit probably erroneous, that if a Peugeot frame has chromed forks and stays, it is their top-of-the-line model. I also assumed that all PX10s were white. As I understand the information supplied under PX10 Database's section entitled "1975 - 1977", if both the forks and stays are chrome, then the frame is Reynolds 531 DB throughout. And, of course, this is assuming my frame is actually 531 and from that time period. However, neither the paint scheme nor the components of my bike match any of the various model descriptions for any of the various time periods. Of course this is a PX10 database and this may not be a PX10, so I'm back to square one trying to figure this one out.

This looks like a repainted frame in which case the owner might have taken whatever decals were available at the time to rebrand the bike as best he could (or he may have unscrupulously branded a non-Peugeot and/or non-Reynolds frame). The absence of a serial number simply compounds the frustration (there are two, small holes in the underside of the BB which would have been where rivets would have attached the serial number plate). At least I can take heart that I only paid $50 for the bike with some very nice components--the two jewels in the crown, at least for me, are the Brooks Pro leather saddle and my favorite derailer in the world, the Simplex Super LJ!

I'm not a Peugeot expert (hell I barely passed french class) but
I do have one question. what kind of dropouts? I can't make it out on
your web page. might be a clue as to identity.

I have added these two photos to the gallery. It appears that the rear is Simplex, so at least I know it's most likely a French frame. The front dropouts are unbranded--and ugly.

Crap, you got a bargin. 50$? Looks around my size, too. The serial number on a plate on the bottom is consistent with Peugeots from a period in the seventies; later on serial numbers were on a taped on piece of paper which disappeared even easier.

May be a repaint, those ain't regular Peugeot type colours. The PX was available in blue, but unless my monitor fails me, it weren't that blue. The components are off. Who knows? Limited edition? Repaint/rebuild? The chrome and braze ons (ie very few) and drops are consistent with a mid seventies PX. What is it, anyway, weird PX day? Between this and the gold one and the possible real early one, I'm beginning to think mswantak and USAZorro (possibly Lotek as well, and some unidicted co-conspirators) are playing some elaborate prank on me. If so, I'll laugh along, this is fun.

Heck, for 50$, I'd buy a Simplex Super LJ, a Brooks, and some barcons (suntour?) any day of the week. And I'd think I stole them, cause I would have. I think it's a PX, just not real stock like.

I was just comparing the pictures to my '74 PX10 and I'm pretty sure you got a really good deal on a repainted '70's PX10. They weren't all white, by the way. Just most of them. The decals are for a later bike and the Reynolds decals are not the correct ones. Are you sure those aren't Lyotard pedals? The name would be on the dust cap. Is the headset a Stronglight Competition? Lots of components have been changed, but I don't have a problem with that. Mine's all Campy NR and SR.

You're right on both counts, Dirtdrop, and my online spec sheet has been adjusted accordingly. I think I'm ready to accept that this is a repainted, rebuilt mid-'70s PX10. Thank you all for your great questions and suggestions--both regarding this bike and others. That's why I paid my $25 membership today. Money well spent.

Yes, it's a refinished PX-10, circa 1975, and you did get a good deal, since the components alone are worth more than the ante.
