The ProFlex is a pretty cool bike and I would consider it to be C&V. Maybe I'm wrong and it's more of an oddity, but there's a guy who rides one at my local trails. Everyone just stops and jawdrops every time it rolls by. Guys that have'nt been into MTBing for at least 10 years ususally have no idea what it is. With the MTB technology wave that went through in the 90s there is a lot of short lived products and companies that exist.

Just so long as you do it in the saddle and not by going over the bars... that would be bad.

This is the coolest thing I have, unfortunately it's too big.

I also have a pretty neat Cannondale 26/24 that I need to get built up. I've been sitting on that project for a couple of years now.

As I warm up from 90 minutes of snowblowing and shoveling, I picked up the perfect bike for this kind of weather, my first mountain bike, a 1994 Performance M-304. I don't know if 1994 qualifies for classic and/or vintage, but I figured I'd share it anyway....

I got it yesterday from a local CL ad, the owner lived ten minutes from work, so I picked it up a lunch. He claimed it's never been ridden, he brought it home from the LBS, put it in his basement, and there it sat until yesterday. I don't know about all that, but the bike doesn't have scratch on it, and all of the orginial components are present and accounted for, down to the tires, per BikePedia.

The frame is double-butted cromolly True Temper AVR. The front fork is a Tange Struts GS. It has the Shimano STX SE group (brakes, levers, shift levers, derailleurs, crank, hubs). Handlebar is Zoom 170, Vetta sadde, Kalloy seatpost and Bontranger BCX-3 rims.

I've tried searching the forums and Googling the Performance brand, but I've found precious little. Does anyone have any background on the company?

While I should take some pictures out in the snow, here are a few from my basement...she's really going to shine when I clean her up...

Possibly Performance the bike mail order house. Nashbar sold it's own house brand, actually they still do. I've seen some early Nashbar MTB frames that looked like dead ringers for 83-85 Stumpjumpers down to the biplane fork.

I was thinking that too...the seller told me he bought the bike at his local LBS...perhaps the LBS ordered the bike from Performance?

I checked Performance's website...they do sell their own line of bikes, although it looks like mostly kid's bikes, with a few MTB frames. Still, the font script and logo on their site are close enough to my bike that I think this is probably where the bike came from...would love to know what manufacturer actually made their frames...I really like the "look" of the bike....

WOW! I just sent mine on TDY to a friend's Fiance to see if he "get's the bug". Very nice bike and I have never seen another one and information on them is hard to come by. I used mine around town a lot. Those funky bars are NOT stock BTW. Enjoy it!

You don't think so? Risers were quite common in the 80s, not always so high, though. A google image search of Schwinn Woodlands returns quite a few pics of 'em with those bars. Couldn't all be the same bike.

OK, I know that my sample is small but my bike had neither those bars nor that stem. It had a "regular" stem, like that green bike only not green and flat bars. I know that that partiular bike was never modified in any way as I got it off of the original owner. Different years or markets could meean diferent equipment I guess, but that's kind of a BIG change for such an un-remarkable bike.

Here she is:

All has to do with frame size I imagine. My 88 is a HUGE frame, I can easily fit the width of my hand between the top and down tubes on it, with room to spare. The top tube is level. I have seen others with smaller frames from about the same year that have sloping TT's. Plus there were models with a 24 inch rear wheel, and a 26 inch front. My friend has one, and he's been trying to find a 24 inch skinwall for a couple of years now with no luck.,,,,BD
