^^^ Thanx!! Yeah, I'm much happier now. I have to say for a mountain bike it has a pretty plush ride and that surprised me. With the replacement bar and stem I'm a lot more forward and so it corners like a blue whale but in a straight line it's pretty awesome. It's going to be a great errand bikee. Here's another shot. Cheers.

^^^ I was wondering how long it would take. The answer is not a snowballs. That's where the most extreme decal damage is. "Express" is missing from the top tube and also an E from PEUGEOT is missing from the down tube. Not to mention the missing lions and stripes from the seat tube. Oh well...at least I've gotten rid of the sorentose that didn't fit and now have a new beater to replace the 730. One step closer to being Trek free.

When I worked at Fishers Cyclery in Salt Lake City, our biggest competitor was Guthrie's, who happened to be a Trek dealer. This was early-mid 90's. Any time anyone came in with any form of a Trek, we'd always chant: "Ride a Trek, ride a wreck". Funny thing is, we were a Gary Fisher dealer, and Trek had just bought the Gary Fisher name.....

I have no problem with the bikes themselves...hell, they're some of the best running bikes I have. My reason is two-fold. Firstly, I didn't like the hatchet job they did on Greg Lemond. Secondly...Jackson used to have 3 or 4 good bike shops and as everyone knows, compitition is a good thing. Two of those eventually failed leaving the 2 big guns. Gun #1 bought out gun #2 but kept the old name. So you have one family that owns the only 2 real bike shops in town. (when I say real, I mean volume) They sell Treks...oh, they'll have a few specialized, felt and whatever but if you go in there they're going to sell you a Trek. What this means after 30 years is that Jackson and the surrounding area is COVERED in Treks. They bore me to distraction. Great for flipping though because they're well known as a quality bike...Lance rides a trek, right? They must be the best!!!

My 85 Canyon has severe decal damage, too. They feel really "plasticky" when I try to peel them off, and they just break instead of peeling off. I may have to get it powdercoated to help me feel better. Great bikes though.

I have 5 older and vintage Treks, I love em. However I bought a LeMond when I was looking for a new bike, mainly because everyone else is riding a Trek.
I really like the way my LeMonds ride and handle. I have a Versaille and an Etape and have had no trouble with either. Yes, I know they were
made by Trek.

Our little chant was driven mostly by competitive nature, i.e., our competitors sold Trek, we didn't. I meant no disparaging Trek as a bicycle or company. I've owned a few myself, and found them to be well mannered, if uninspiring, bicycles. Course, my Treks have been no nicer than upper mid level, none of the fancy schmancy stuff like carbon or Y-bikes...

Back on the subject of vintage mountain bikes: I found this yesterday while answering an old Schwinn bikes local ad. The schwinns were the usual collection of Varsitys and a World Sport. I did not buy any of them, but noticed something very red and yellow way back in the garage rafters. I now own a Miyata Path Winder. I have no idea of what I will do with it, but it looked so lonely hanging there!!!

it looks nearly new. And with those loooong chainstays, it should ride very plushly. It would be a good candidate for offroad touring, if you set it up with rear panniers...

Hey...I'm new here, been lurking and learning a bit recently. Anyway, I picked up a '91 (or '92?) Rockhopper Sport with Suntour X-1 group to build a cheapish Retrovelo homage I suppose.
I've added Fat Franks, a Flyer Special, and I'm mocking the build up with a cheap stem with shorter reach and more height and Wald 867 bars...may end up Nitto Dirtdrop (or maybe just cheap Kalloy copy) and Nitto B603s.
Adding a sealed BB and headset, fresh pads, and cables as well.
Also trying to decide on whether to partial paint or completely powdercoat the frame. First I need to remove the decals...any ideas without destroying the paint? I may need to rub/sand them off and then spot spray/blend those areas. Might be easier to powdercoat the lot.
Stem, bars and Wald fenders will possibly be match powdercoated or painted depending on final scheme.
Here's a crappy phone pic for now...just getting started:

Hey Fast Cloud... Do you know if the Rockhoppers were clearcoated over the decals? I will put a hair dryer or low setting heat gun to it shortly...just wondering if you had direct experience with an early 90's Specialized???
Thanx,

I just picked up an early 80s Nishiki Pueblo frame. Picked it up for next to nothing at my LBS. I'm not sure it was ever built up. I think it might have been damaged in shipping because, other than a few scratches that it might have picked up on the floor in the attic, it's in excellent condition other than the frame spacing is 100mm... If Sheldon Brown was right, a 2x4 and the careful application of force will fix everything. Do any of you have any info on these bikes?

My "84" or "85" Cannodale Alpine. Cleaned up and overhauled after hanging in the garage for 15 years.

This is my only mtb the frame is about 1983-84, components are 1987 era. Biopace chain rings. I added a vbrake in the rear because old style cantilevers stuck outward too far and panniers would push the brake against the rim.
I have added a link to my flicker page since I don't know how to add photoshttps://https://www.flickr.com/photos/...rb/4124107406/

Not a complete bike, but neato nonetheless:
An adapter to add a 4th ring to the crankset, using a freewheel cog. This one is 18t.
Think Mountain Tamer Quad or Avid Microdapter.
Best part is the kid behind the counter had no idea what it was, so he threw it in gratis!
Now what to put it on???

Great bikes. Love the TimberComp, and the MB1. What brake levers originally came on the MB1 dirt drop bike? Just curious because I am working on an era correct dirt drop setup myself.
Thanks,
