Surly Singleator is the stuff. I had one for about a year, and finally got around to installing it. I highly recommend the "up" spring for it. Mine had the "down" spring, and even mild bumps made the chain feel like it wanted to skip. Once I changed the spring, all was well. It wraps the chain more than halfway around the cog, and makes for a rock solid drivetrain.,,,,BD

Starting in 1990 7XX Treks were 700C hybrids, 700 was the base model, then 720 & 730 were upgrades. There was also a 750, flat-bar touring hybrid.

This is a simplification, you can see the whole line-up here: https://www.vintage-trek.com/model_numbers1.htm

Thx IthaDan and WNG for the info. Yes, I was quite excited about that $5 Fisher Advance, especially as it came with another $5 Gary Fisher Zebrano (700C hybrid) from the same lady. The smaller Advance I kept for my son, and the Zebrano I gave to a friend's son. (Actually I sold it on to him for $5, because he didn't want to just take it free). That was a good day on CL to be sure.

As for the Trek 7?? with DT shifters, it rained the other day and the bike was brought in from the porch. I'll keep an eye out though.

That's the first quarda fork I've seen in a long time that didn't have blown elastomers and was sitting on its bumpstops.

I always liked the satin finishes on those Marins. And exage? That puts it around 92-93. Nice find.

Thanks! I'm always on the look out for vintage MTBs that have complete, working forks. This was on ebay, pick-up only. I bid on it before I even saw it, luckily they are located in southern NH, not too far from me. I'm not sure if the Exage is original, when I asked the original owner if he upgraded the drivetrain and forks, he said yes without specifying which. I know that 94 came with Deore LX FD/RD and brakes (at least according to bikepedia) and 92-93 came with Exage FD/RD and brakes...

You're on to something there- The fork isn't from the same time as the exage. As a rule of thumb, [elastomer] Quadras came out in the time of stx components. Exage was more the a [air/oil] mag 10/21 era. The brakes look like LX cantilevers, the exage versions were the same bluish as the cranks. Furthermore, to your point, I didn't think that satin finish was that old- I'd thought that was from the era of the white industries cranks being OEM on marins. Wonder what the story is there.

A couple years older and the bike would have had the kickin' rad neon fade:

I am still trying to pry a rigid yellow Cannondale M700 out of my bosses hands. Looks like a Birkenstock edition, but no Birk logo. Has STX so mid to late nineties I imagine? It looks almost pristine paintwise. I have a black/silver XT/LX mix group, and some Avid shorty canti's I'd LOVE to install on it.,,,,BD

Looks a LOT like this one, but M700 and rigid forks..

I've seen those Marins around and let me tell you, I'm pretty jealous. Either way though, I'm not into keeping things all original or even period correct (sorry!). I just like the look and feel of these older MTBs. I feel like the components can take more of a beating and stay working than some of the newer stuff...or maybe I'm just biased . I'm placing the bike somewhere between 92 and 94, with some upgrades done in the early 90s as well. All I know is that it is light and quick, and that is perfect for the trails around here.

That turned out really well, but you may want to change to a black Flite, this blue one makes it a bit colorful :")

No need to apologize, I'm the same way. Part of what got me started on this long strange trip of being a bicycle nut was swapping parts out on my trek in the mid 90s.

Yes, that's a Judy DH. I think the Judy came available late '94, early '95. Iron Horse carried the FS Works from 1992 to '95 or even '96 - I don't know exactly, as there was no Iron Horse in Holland or anywhere else in Europe I think. Of course we all knew them from Dave Cullinan's 1992 world title in Bromont.

I very well remember creating Iron Horse decals for one of my Verlicchis. Very simple decals. I used WordArt and had them printed on transparant sticker sheet at the local copy shop. Within a couple hours and only 1,50 euro poorer I had my decals. A kid can do the laundry. Maybe give it a try. Other things on a 'to do' list could be sourcing some ControlTech parts. Already Cully had them fitted on his bike. Sell the Spinergy's and get some proper wheels that could stand downhill use.

My newly refurbished 1993ish GT!
Pretty fast and very stiff for an old bike. I probably won't get it "dirty" again but it sure is fun to goof off on.

86 Diamondback Apex (with fenders, rack, full saddlebag) - 32lbs
88 Univega Alpina Pro - 30lbs
89 Diamondback Apex (single speed) - 27lbs

(for comparison, my 700c bikes (Ironman and Motobecane SS)are both ~23lbs)

Both the 86 Apex and Univega have heavy tires.. most of the tires i've been looking at for the Univega would drop ~1.5 lbs. not sure how much under 28lbs I could get it though. I'm also wondering how light i could get my 86 apex by replacing some of the low end stuff.. if it didn't have the fenders, rack and saddlebag i bet it would be close to 30 or under

I finally pestered (lightheartedly of course) enough, and he says yes tonight, like 5 minutes before closing time. Woohoo. I have to swap the parts from my High Sierra onto it, and the STX/RC onto the High Sierra. Aside from a few interchange problems(front derailleur mainly), it should go rather smoothly. I am shooting for a 25-26 pound Cannondale once finished. The brakes on the Cannondale are beyond hope, but I have a set of Avid Shorty's to drop in the mix. Gonna be such a sweet little rigid C'dale. Really looking forward to it. I have some excellent condition era correct Tioga skinwalls too. I will have to wait for payday to get the ball rolling, cables, grips, etc..,,,,BD

Just did a little research, and it's a 97-99 model, so not all that vintage. The condition of the paint is nearly flawless though, and the rigid fork helps it look the part at least. All cleaned up and the baby seat rack in the dumpster, it will be awesome. Bikepedia says 24.7 pounds, so I was pretty close on my estimate. Should be a little lighter with the XT stuff though, since STX had chromed steel bits in it, instead of full alloy. The Acera crank is probably just shy of a boat anchor too....
