here's my Yokota El Capitan that I just "finished" (aka, found all the extra parts I had laying around that would fit the frame). LX/SLX group (the cranks were bent, so I had to use what I could find), Deore thumbies, Suntour NOS brake levers, & a bunch of random other parts.














I think it's an 88-89, judging by the paint. came to me as a frame/fork and I've been collecting cheap/miss matched parts to put on it. nothing too special, but it actually rides really nice!

Love the smoke paint job! We sold a lot of these back in 1990 at World Cycle. I had a Red 89 el cap back then but sold it.

My legend (road bike) is similar. Nothing special, but a decent rider. I've been keeping it around for a potential gravel bike. I'm thinking 650b with 10spd ergos controlling a shimano 8 drivetrain. (Maybe full microshift 10)

About three years ago, a neighbor was moving out and had a garage sale.
I picked this up for $20 (I replaced the dry rotted knobby tires with these).

I posted it over in the commuter forum - because I was thinking of painting it. It was suggested that I get a few opinions from this group first.



I was thinking og keeping it around as a back-up, snow day (yeah right, in Nashville), or adding racks/baskets to make it an errand/grocery getter.

I'm not a fan of decals on any bike. It was just an idea, not too fond of the pink either.
Howver, you are correct the condition of the current paint is pretty good. A little faded, could probably be waxed back to a shine.

keen eye, Cyclotoine. Yes, they are Quadra 21r's. The frame has Richey drop outs. It's a little on the small side for me or I would try to give it a little restore. For now, it's the visitors spair bike.

That is classic, I love the colour and think it would be a real shame to paint that one. But! the big BUT. if you will enjoy it more if you paint it then you should paint it.

I too like the voodoo bike. I have that EXACT stem on my Specialized FSR. Voodoo stuff is neat.

And I just built this up again on Monday out of whatever I had lying around, and love it. Got some bars coming in the mail that actually belong on a MTB, then I'll hit the trails some more and decide if it needs a different fork.

+1... I'm with you, that Surly fork will handle anything you throw at it... leave it be!

Yep, I'm sure it will. The fork is a Troll fork, corrected for 100mm travel, while the frame isn't designed for that. Handled amazingly with north road bars, not totally sure how it will handle as a MTB. I'd either get another Surly that would fit the geometry, or find a suspension fork that would be worth putting on. Just rode home from a party on it, was a total blast, maybe the fork can stay awhile at least. Really need new pedals though, current ones are kinda creaky.

No, Not motorcycle bars. Just my favorite bend of my motorcycle bars. After riding dirt bikes for 35+ years I just like this bend. Bicycle bars I bent to my liking. The crossbar, yes, off one of my old motorcycles. You have to go with what ya like. Some things are hard to give up.

just picked this up yesterday. $100 plus it came with shoes. "94 Stumpjumper M2 FS 15.5" with replaced suspension seat post, front shock, and a Ti stem. I know almost nothing about front suspension. is this Manitou any good? any idea what the model is? it says "answer" on it but were there specific "answer" models? I have only done a little googling so far. I have a contemporary KHS Montana comp with a Marzzochi bomber that I believe is a decent fork. otherwise, I have no experience with suspended bikes.

Just picked up this very good condition 1993 Raleigh Portage for $75 dollars. I don't normally ride MTBs but I figured it was time I had one! Has a neat raspberry on silver paint job. I'm thinking it will be my winter ride as well.

New project time! Just showed up to work today. I'm really looking forward to building this one up. I've been wanting a lugged Trek 9XX series for a while now and this one happened to pop up on C/L for $35! Trek sure did some wierd stuff with this frame... 29.8 seat post, no front derailluer cable stop, and an 1 1/8 threaded steer tube. Man, the 90's were crazy! First plan of action is to have a Cable stop brazed on to the seat tube... Unless I come up with a cheaper option. Convert from threaded to Threadless( dude sold me an old Specilized 1 1/8 threadless fork with roughly the same rake and A to C for $10), and strip and repaint. Not sure what direction I want to go with this build..

Nice score! That triple butted lugged Tange "Big Fork" is great, I wouldn't lose that stock fork for anything! Do make sure you lose that stupid Matrix quill stem, stinkin' boat anchor, that thing sucks! The 970 had an identical frame as my 950, but the 970 came with full XT instead of the LX/XT mix on the 950. That 1992 model (I believe) was the next to last year that Trek made lugged mountain bike frames in America. Have fun with the build!

Thanks! I defintiely wont loose that fork. Actually I was measuring the Specilized fork last night and it turns out that its about an 1" longer than the original which in turn would slacken the HTA about 1 degree... I'd hate to comprimise the handleing just to go threadless. I think what I'm going to do is just do a quick n dirty build just to make sure I like how it handles.. If I find I love it and can't live without it then I'll add braze-ons, repaint and all that jazz. I'm not sure what I'm going to do in the stem department...

Origin8 makes a nice cable stop. I think you can get it in black also.

Nice bike. Answer purchased Manitou thus 'Answer' on the fork. Right above where it says Manitou on the fork leg should be the model - looks like an SX.
