I used to have that same bike. I sold mine to a kid looking to get into riding but not having a lot of money to do so. I know I could have gotten a lot more than $80 for it but got him started and last I heard he still rides the hell out of it.

It's good to help a kid out, I gave $150 for mine a couple years ago. I recently purchased a larger 950 frame from another forum member and swapped all the parts over. This picture was the day I purchased it, I've since add city tires, fenders and such for commuting.

*finally*.. after being put on the back burner over and over, I got this thing built up! Exactly 24 lbs as pictured.

I took it for a spin off road and it performed really well. I put on some nice folding tires with knobbies I had laying around and I didnt notice any significant difference between that and a steel bike. The suntour drivetrain i could live without though.. Shimano Hyperglide definitely kicks the pants out of accushift. I'm considering putting a centerion pulley wheel from a shimano RD on the Suntour RD so that it's not as finicky. Plus once in a while I would get unexpected shifts.. hopefully the cassette isn't worn out cause it's not easy to find replacements

Nice 8300. I have a 1990 TREK 8500 but the decals have all faded due to UV exposure. Bought it when I was doing my university days in Calgary. Used it as my commuting bike for grocery trips, come snow, sleet rain. Really an all-seasons bike for me till I managed to get a car. After that, I used it for trails and downhill rides in Banff. Full Shimano DEORE XT II gear components with Specialized toeclips.



Had the itch to get a comfy fork so I tried using an RST fork that fitted the DEORE headset.

Here is my Gary Fisher Tassajara. I think it is about a 1994ish. Recently converted it to a single speed and picked up another set of wheels for city use.

Sorry for the lack of graphics, the yellow Gary Fisher writing is a bit too flashy for a city bike and a layer of red duct tape prevents paint scrapes.

Wow frantik, I'm really thrown off by the seatstay cantilever mount and the lack of drop bars. I have to say, Aemmer's Potts wears the crown for coolest custom in the Chainstay Brake Mafia! I really dig the last photo you posted, it instantly makes me hopeful for the path ahead!

I have no new projects completed as of yet but I did score some parts over the weekend for present and future builds.



I picked up a black set of Kooka 170mm cranks with Kooka rings, a set of new in the box black Kooka 175mm crank arms, a black Kooka 110mm stem, an ol'skool 1" Salsa quill stem (my favorite quill brand). The XTR front derailleur doesn't belong in the photo as I forgot to remove it from the shot, it's for my late-90's Psycle Werks WildHare as it inches towards its 20 birthday.

yeah I considered putting drops on this one but I decided to keep it flat bar. It's all suntour so it's nice to keep all the suntour stuff together and also the steerer tube is cut super short so i would need a heavy riser stem. I do want to swap out the flat bar for a bar with a riser bar though..

Sorry Yes, I do ride it. I don't ride it like Herbold used to do with his bikes, but it sees some cyclepath on Sundays. For the vintage downhill experience I have a Verlicchi.

I've been riding 700c bikes, almost all hybrids, for almost 20 years. In the past couple of years I've become curious about 26" wheels and really fat tires so I started watching for old MTB's that I could pick up fairly cheap. The first one I bought was a 1995 Trek 820. A few months later I picked up a mid-to-late 80's Takara that looks like a copy of a mid-80's Stumpjumper. I don't care for the ride of the Takara and it's currently in pieces. The 820 is another story altogether. I've test ridden a 26" Long Haul Trucker, a Surly Karate Monkey and a Surly Troll. I didn't like the LHT, I liked the KM and I loved the Troll. I've been seriously contemplating buying a Troll frameset and building it up but I keep coming back to how much I love riding the old 820! I think from a cost-benefit analysis, I would probably just keep the 820 and upgrade it with components I already own. That's my current plan but if I discover I really like riding in the dirt, which is something I plan to try, I will likely decide to go ahead and get a Troll.

I was forced to put a big fat seat, kickstand, and pink basket on one of those for a customer this past summer, glad to see one built up and used as it should be. Great bike!

Thanks Elev12k for the close up shots, you are running the exact set up I imagined you put together, like I said previously you have some incredibly beautiful bikes and it's always a treat when you share!

Going back to my BMX days, I've always been a fan of Adventure Components. I was fortunate enough to have an AC rear hub and brake booster in the box of spares when I put together my 96'er.

Years ago I bought an old stock of AC boosters in multiple colors and a DH crankset with single machined ring. All very nice stuff. I remember seeing the boosters in the German BIKE magazin in the early 90s. Over DM 100 each. Of course I couldn't afford.

Thanks frantik, you're right, seeing a 1987 MB-1 always makes me feel better! The only year to come stock as a dirt drop bike... such a cool build and the stock specs Grant Petersen used are as timely and tasty as anything available today!



The seller posted a bunch of lousy non-drive side pics but at least this photo highlights the stock front end.
