1992 or 1993 Specialized Rockhopper. I bought it as a frameset with a few minor components left on it but the only thing I left on it is the headset, which I'll have replaced eventually. I originally bought this frame to do a single-speed conversion. I got it working but the wheel was so far forward in the (short) dropout that I decided to try the half-link route. That was a disaster that resulted in both a broken half-link and a broken chain tool. By that time, I had decided to use this frameset to build up the single chainring, multi-speed project I've been wanting to experiment with. I'm currently running a 38t chainring with a 7-speed cassette but I don't have a shifter cable so I simply adjusted the derailleur to keep the chain on a useable gear (65 gear inches) and I've been riding it like a single. I may eventually put a granny ring on and make it a 2x7.
I've had some fit issues with handlebar height and the long top-tube but I think I've finally got it dialed in. I had planned to look for a larger Rockhopper or Stumpjumper but I think part of the appeal of this bike is that it's on the smaller side so it feels more light and agile. I also thought about getting a Surly Troll but for the riding I'm doing now, I don't think a Troll offers a single thing (other than being a new bike) that would be a benefit over the Rockhopper.
Current setup is a bit different than this photograph. I have a silver V-brake on the front and nothing on the back and it has a traditional silver stem instead of the adapter shown in this picture. Riding this is the most fun I've had on a bike in years and my $1500+ 700c bike is now gathering dust.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
Went out for 222 km this weekend on a fully loaded test, installed an LX compact triple with a 20/32/44 mated to a 12-32... this was useful when I was rolling up those hills with 45kg of bike and gear.
Re-loaded for some lighter touring...

Here's my 1992 Specialized Hard Rock Ultra. Bought from the original owner. Upgraded to new cartridge bottom bracket, stem, cables/housing/brake pads, KMC X8.93 chain and Shimano 7-speed cassette. Ordered a Shimano touring crankset circa 1988 for it, and scored Shimano M732 Canti brakes with MT 62 levers, M735 front/rear derailleurs. The Nitto risers, grips and MKS Graphite 2000 were OEM from my '86 Fuji Sundance. Brooks B17, matte black bottle cages and Paselas 26 x 1.75.
Here's some photos fresh off tonight's ride.

Sweet bike! Love the color combo.
Here's my contribution to this thread. Not one of the more sought after of the strain but it's in excellent condition. Only ridden 3 times and stored indoors before I got my hands on it. Fits perfect! I have another one like this one only a year older - not in half the shape as this one - it's been ridden. I need a nut for the front brake gizmo as i replaced the stem and handlebar because they were steel.

Yeah, in 1991, MB5 is the lowest priced one to get aluminum bars. All had steel stems but MB4 thru Zip had nicer Ritchey steel stems.

I want an MB Zip but the sellers want my left pinky for them. My other MB6 is showing some rust so I got this one since I loved the other so much. My old one now sports a Topeak system with fenders and a front removable basket for my 12 pack of Bud.

Mb3s are generally the sweet spot in quality vs price around here. I had an mb2 with the biplane fork for a bit but liked my mb3 better so sold the 2.

Thanks for the advice... I'll take a look at those from now on - but I'm really wanting to upgrade my vintage road bike to brifters.

Nice bike Dave! Interesting guards on it and the fork rack mounts make it a great off road touring candidate. Rare to see drum brakes too.

Not sure if they completely qualify as vintage yet, or not. The teal colored one is my 96 Klein Pulse II. I bought it from the original owner and he didn't like the original burnt orange color so had it shipped to Yeti and had it painted their color. Pretty sure the fork was an upgrade. This one is the lighter of the two.
The blue is my dad's that he just sent home for me - maybe a year or two newer - Klein Pulse Comp. Original owner had upgraded to Deore XT and the front disc brake which came in handy yesterday on my long descent (as long as I didn't grab too much of the front brake lever).
Both climb like goats and are fun to ride.

Anything Klein counts as vintage. Even if they don't its C & V which means it qualifies for Classic status.

A '91 white Trek 800 I picked up & rebuilt for my goofy 9 year old. The cool thing is its almost identical to one I had in college, except mine was black.
