As shown, it is the lightest steel MTB I have come across. I thought I'd try the Forte 26 X 1.25 tires for a while. But my test ride with them was not an ah hah moment; I may not need/want 85 psi tires on an MTB.

I found that type of fork (Fat bottom into fork ends) and others like them to ride tooo rigid on road at a similar pressure, put on a Spinner tapered blade fork on the bike I had and that softened it through the handle bar, at least enough to ride the bike as a commuter for 2 years until someone ran it over after I hd jumped to the safety of the grass verge after someone pulled out on me . . . person did not stop either

75psi feels a little more friendly

I've posted this bike in here previously a couple years ago, but just picked up these perfect new tires from Performance to match the livery of my bike and added Ergon grips.

1987 Cannondale SM400 with Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub.

The components were made in September & October of '89 which makes sense for a 1990 bike if you think about Shimano producing the components and shipping them to Specialized for assembly in time for delivery by early '90.

I took another photo of my '86 Diamondback Ascent an hour after installing a pair of Continental RetroRides. Now I'm trying to not let the dirty stripe down the centers drive me insane. This is probably my last pair of cream colored tires.

A lot of these bikes look like Hybrids with the larger wheels. I usually think of a Mtn' Bike having 26 inch rims. Of course now it seems like it's going that way again with all the "29's" and "650b" Mtn. bikes.

I'd wager 98% of these bikes have 26" rims if not more. The 29er hasn't been around that long and I'd guess the 650b or 27.5" mountain bike is probably not more than 5 years old.

The geometry of vintage mountain bikes is similar to more modern hybrids though in a lot of cases.

Are any of the bikes on this page using 26 inch rims? They look bigger to me.

Yeah, the white one is mine and I can definitively say that it has 26"rims. I'd bet my life the others do too. Must just be an optical trick looking at a flat picture on a screen.

Wow. My eyes. They aren't what they used to be. The thinner tires might be adding to the illusion.

Let it go.

It's proof that the bike is actually ridden and enjoyed.

I have them on my Miyata fishing bike and I hit every mud puddle I could find to break them of that "too shiny" look.

Your bike looks ready for action btw.

If one can post a Cannondale converted to a 3-speed "townie" (sweet black and white build BTW) can I post a dirt drop conversion?

Maiden off road climb for a recent acquisition. That's what I have to say when people ask me "Did you get a new bike?" (I now have a reputation) "No, but it's a recent acquisition." (The only bike I ever bought new got stolen years ago.) This '94 MB-1 is currently running as a 1x7 with a 36x11-28. Soon to be a 1x8 with an 11-30 cassette.

I decided that I really like the dirt drop conversion for descents. It has been decades since I have descended on a mountain bike (I'm a roadie) and things got a little exciting when a front brake pad slipped under the rim... twice. Second time I stopped (eventually, and without crashing thankfully) and adjusted it.

Speaking of "new," that first bike was an '87 Specialized Hard Rock. It was more of a trail bike (or a boat anchor, depending on your point of view) than a mountain bike. I was in 7th grade and couldn't afford any better. I always dreamt of a better bike. Who knew that one would come along nearly 30 years later, and with lugged Tange Prestige tubing no less!! I'm not a big fan of climbing with shocks, however, I felt like I was bouncing the whole time. Could be my novice technique...

I have a '97 Stage Comp from right around the time Trek bought them out. Still had the hand finishing of when they were truly Kleins. I would say it qualifies. I love their deep blue paint job with yellow lettering. Both of your frames are gorgeous - build what you like!

Hi Mark - sorry for the late response. Unfortunately I probably never been out in gusts of more than 15-20 mph. Now-a-days it is relegated to mostly city riding as we live downtown Tampa. You really needed to sit "back" on this bike and always hit the rear brakes first. It is very light (25.4 lbs with the pedals) which is why I enjoy it for on-road riding as well. Just got done putting M952 XTR back on it.

@Repack Rider -- awesome photo! What a great place to be for vintage mtbs.

This weekend I took a little sojurn to Curt Gowdy State Park for some riding. I took my late 90s mountain bike: a Diamondback Racing TT Axis Pro Titanium. It's certainly "vintage" in MTB terms with is 26" wheels, v-brakes, aggressive geometry, etc. Its seen a few upgrades over the past couple years: a newer Rock Shock Reba Team fork, and a more modern cockpit (700mm bars and 100mm stem -- replacing the 580mm bars and 150mm stem it came with.) Not many close ups, but a few drama shots:

It's a famous bike, known as "Breezer #2 ," built in 1978 and one of the first bikes made for this new sport that did not yet have a name. Where is "Breezer #1 , you ask? In the collection of the Smithsonian, along with my club jersey from 1972.

Charlie one-ups everyone in this thread that bike. Once I get better at brazing I'm planning on making myself a copy of one of those Breezers.
