A friend and I Raced our vintage Rock Lobsters in the "1986 and Older" vintage category at Keyesville Classic Mountain Bike Stage Race. There was a good showing of fine vintage mountain bikes. Our two Lobsters are at the top of this photo along with most of the other vintage bikes that were there.

There were a lot of nice bikes there, though many of them didn't race.

There were two Vintage race categories "1986 and Older" and "1987 to 1996"

The owner of this beautiful Trimble flew out from New Jersey for the race.

They are Kevlar. I have a trash save rear wheel laced to a 700 rim that has a spoke pulled through the hoop.

kevlar, that makes sense. They are pretty sweet but your trash score is a reminder that if any part of the wheel breaks, the whole thing is probably done for since there aren't a lot of replacement parts out there. I haven't ridden the bike with any other front wheel but it feels good

Bought this 1988 Stumpjumper Comp in pieces a few months ago, and just got it built back up today. The frame is pretty beat up, but everything works well and it rides nice.

I had one that size and color scheme 5ish years ago. A shame I never built it up. It was a Hard Rock "Cruz". It was cool but also beat on.,,,,BD

Brent, your RL looked fantastic. And the fact you are the original owner adds to the coolness. Great showing of bikes, but yea it was a weird year for racing with several people holding out. I could not race this year. Usually good for all three stages. Hopefully you guys had a great time and plan to make it again next year.

1992 Trek 930 Singletrack. Was totally original until I had it overhauled the other day and put some new tires, tubes and brake pads on it. The bike had low miles and was bought in '92 near a major Univ in my state. He used it for getting around campus, and evidently not much of that. I bought it from him around '03 because it fit me so well. But even then the original grease was pretty much gone, so I parked it in the garage thinking I would overhaul it and ride it. Fast forward to now, when I have sold all my bikes except this one. I didn't have a few tools I needed for it so I figured I would probably have at least part of it done at a shop. Turned on the computer one morning and got a Groupon for a half-price overhaul, so I bought one. The shop turned out to be very nice - sort of upscale and in the vicinity of the downtown Univ which has thousands of bike riders. The shop personnel were young but friendly - professional but not aloof. And they did exceptional work. They didn't laugh at my ancient steel bike, rather seemed genuinely interested in it's features. I dropped it off in the mid-morning. I was on my way to a sax gig at 4 PM and they called to tell me it was finished. I picked it up the next day and was very pleased. I finally finished preparing it to go on the street with a rear reflector and a bar-end mirror and took it out on my street just to check everything out. It had been so long since I rode it that I had to re-learn how to shift it - it has dual levers for both derailleurs, both indexed. One raises the chain to the next lower gear for downshifting and the other lets the derailleur fall to the next higher gear for upshifting. I knew that of course but did not remember which did what. Took about five seconds to get straight.
The bike looks great and is as smooth as silk. I have promised myself I'm going to get back into it and I intend to do it.

Before:

After:

I know, big deal. But, it really looks new. I would be surprised if there's another one like this in this condition. Here's the rundown; 18" True Temper fully-lugged frame, 'Cruise Control' fork, Shimano 500LX crankset, 500LX and 400LX derailleurs, Shimano 505MO 'Rapid-Fire' shifters. Tires are now smoother, thinner and have GUMWALLS! I just like gumwalls. Hey, I'm much more ancient than the bike.

I thought it was smaller, but I measured 17.5" to the top of the top tube. I can get nearly 18" if I measure to the top of the seat tube clamp collar.

Someone's selling a 930 here for about $100. If I wasn't already up to my armpits in bike parts, I'd be tempted.

You really have to be careful with a MTB this old - that would be a good buy if it's a nice example.

Congratulations! You'll have a fine time with it. I see you are in Oakland: You might want to consider a trip across the San Rafael Bridge to China Camp State Park, a great place to learn how to ride a mountain bike. Start with the gently rolling Bayview Trail then tackle some of the more challenging terrain. A good single track trail system there.

Joaquin Miller is totally do-able on that bike too. Just stick to Sunset trail and Sequoia Bayview trail your first time out. This website is a great resource for riding in the bay area Bay Area Mountain Bike Rides

Lake Chabot will be another nice trail not too far from you. Unfortunately, most of the singletracks are off limits to bikes, but it still has pretty decent fireroads.

Yeah they have been listed, but no bites yet. I am not in a hurry, so we will see. I really wanted to keep the 90 DB Apex for second drop bar conversion, that low rider mount for fork is very nice, but I ended up going with 87 Schwinn Cimarron and a 91 Specialized RockHopper Sport. I will probably regret selling it, but I need to clear out some stock.
