Suntour Research

I have been on a little bit of a Suntour jag lately. Dumpster dove through the lbs junk parts bins and came up with the following research. While scholarly, I feel that it is obscure and pedantic enough to
preserve my net worth as a scientist.

Rear Derailleurs:

VxGT Long Cage 209 g
Cyclone short cage first generation: 178 g
Cyclone Medium Cage
(intermediate between I and II): 211 g
Cyclone Mark II Medium Cage: 172 g
ARX Long Cage: 245 g
Superbe First Generation: 170 g
Superbe Pro: 186 g
Superbe Tech long cage: 295 g

Front Derailleurs:

Cyclone First Generation: 96 g
Cyclone II with endless clamp: 93 g
ARX (alloy cage?): 91 g
Superbe First Generation: 101 g

The senior mechanic was astonished that I found the ARX front. He said that
their cages were trashed in short order and he thought he had
replaced every one in the world.

Of course, the list is not complete, and so I must seek additional funding to
complete this research. There are still the cranks, bottom brackets, brakes, levers,
and miscellaneous other things that must be weighed!

Dude, There's a web site that has all that information on all the models already. Just have to remember where it is.

btw - you're also missing the Compe-V FD.

ya. missing lots of stuff. It would be nice to see the website if you could remember where it is. WeightWeenies is a good site for a wide range of weights, but not vintage stuff...

Try this: https://www.yellowjersey.org/stour80b.html There are other pages there with other years. They're missing pre-1980 stuff though. I'll see if that's around somewhere tomorrow night.

Well, then. Some of the weights in my table are, uh, useful. Like, between 82 and 89. Well, some of those are in that time frame. um...this may influence my chances to acquire funding for continued research....

interesting, though, that most of the weights come out to within a gram, except the first generation Superbe rear. My derailleur weighs 28 grams less than advertised. I'm pretty sure that it's all there...where'd that extra ounce go?

Didn't find any of those. I am trying to get some Sprint components together; if I get 'em I'll post the results here. The lbs also has some alpha stuff, but if it indexes the owner thinks it's valuable. Maybe I'll take the scales down there and get some weights.

There are two sites. One is Damon Rinard's at:
https://www.damonrinard.com/weights.htm

The other one is the Weight Weenies'site at:

damon's site is way cool. just added it to the vintage links at the top.

What, me worry about redundant research? nah. My main customer is the Department of Energy, where most everything is redundant...

Maybe you can explain to them how it takes more energy to create ethanol than you get from using it and get it de-funded.

Just got myself a way-cool non-digital scale and figured I'd add some to the list. Some will probably be repetitive, but I've gotta carry on my own research at the junk bins...

Rear Derailleur:
1976 Cyclone GT (med cage)...............194g
1979 Vx-S (short cage)......................214g
1984 Superbe Pro (open cage).............168g
1985 Superbe Pro (closed cage)...........182g
1985 Sprint......................................190g
1987 a-5000.....................................280g
1989 a-3040.....................................276g
???? Superbe Tech.............................300g
And just for fun:
1975 Shimano 600..............................238g
1977 Shimano 600..............................230g

Front Derailleur:
???? Compe-V...................................145g
1975 Cyclone......................................98g
1977 Vx............................................116g
1977 SL (Al Cage)..............................110g
1981 7.............................................114g
1983 Mountech (Al cage).......................98g
1984 XC (1/2 Al cage)..........................114g
Also for fun:
1985 Shimano 600 (FD-6207)................112g

Other Stuff:
???? Cyclone brake levers, non-aero, w/hoods........................................226g
1984 Cyclone crank, w/ 52 & 42, no bolts/dust covers..............................678g
???? Sugino Super Mighty crank, w/ drilled 54 & 44, no bolts/dust covers.....648g

That'll have to be my contribution until I can come up with a set of Cyclone brakes (nutted) and shifters or tear down a couple of bikes for cleaning, but as always feel free to carry on your own research... don't just take my word for it .
