Cannondale ST 500 Derailleur

I'm dusting off my 1986 Cannondale ST500. I just took it to the shop today for a complete overhaul. I know that technology has changed a lot in the past 10 years, so I'm wondering - is there any advantage to replacing the Suntour derailleurs with Shimano? The bike has a triple chainring and a 6-gear freeewheel. If I do replace the deraillers, what will fit that setup? I could always just subscribe to the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" theory...

Thanks in advance for the suggestions...

It isn't a question of what fits, but what works if you have index shifting and want to keep it.If friction, paractically anythng works. But why, if what's on it works??
