so, a guy on craig's list is selling a black schwinn letour for $75, made of 4130. somewhere I picked up that there were 3 models of letour in the 70s, 80s (panasonic), and the mid-90s.
seems he bought it in the mid-90s, but it's (edit: should have said "lugged") and has a "schwinn chicago" headbadge, and horizontal dropouts. I thought this would have made it older.
Anyone know what the letour story is?
Another guy near me is selling a triumph gran course 10-spd, looks to be reynolds 531 all around. I cannot find any info on triumph road bikes anywhere. help.... would be greatly appreciated.

Regarding the Letours, there were a great variety of them in terms of quality. Generally, the newer they are, the better they are. Get the date code from the headbadge and I can probably fill you in on the specifics of the bike from the applicable catalog.

Have you tried the Schwinn Forum for information? They were helpful in dating my Le Tour Luxe. I provided a picture and they dated it as an 82.

Well there is the Super LeTour, and the LeTour, and I think one more, I know the Super had shifters on the down tube with braze on bosses, and might have been a few pounds lighter, but I'm not sure what other differences there are. I pulled the D.R's off of my LeTour, and use it as a train station ride. It's a solid enjoyable bike.
