Finding A Raleigh.

Hi

Where are some good places to look around for a nice Raleigh?

I am not looking to get into collecting, but would like to find a mechanically sound example for general riding.

Any ideas appreciated.

A Raleigh what? They've offered so many models for so many years... First figure out what type of bike you're after, then have a look at what they had to offer. Check these old brochures out: https://bulgier.net/pics/bike/Catalogs/Retro-Raleighs/ Check out the parent directory as well; more Raleigh brochures there too.

Well, that's just it: I'm not looking for any particular model. Just some ideas as to where I might start looking for a decent brit bike in good shape. I used to ride Armstrongs myself, but I am not particular as to which Raleigh sub brand I end up with, though it would be nice to come across one of the nicer marques.

Thanks for the link.

My Super Grand Prix came from a church tag sale for something like $25.
Not real high up the Raleigh food chain, but I like it.

Keep your eyes open for the vaious garage, yard sales, flea markets, thrift shops and the classified ads in newspapers. That is where I found my Phillips/Raleigh.

Well, this Raleigh is on Craigslist, and while I have little to no idea what it is, the owner has even less of an idea as to what it is, but he says it's in showroom condition...

You might check out the neighborhoods on garbage day. In two years I have acquired: Mercian (frame), 2 Raleighs, Schwinn Le Tour, Panasonic, Centurion, and a Trek without really trying. It's a middle to upscale neighborhood. There are old trucks that cruise each week picking up similar treasures. I believe Fall is the best season to find bikes (cleaning out the garage for the winter) around here.

You shouldn't have too hard of a time. I'm wondering if you're here in NYC? If so, Raleighs often pop up on craigslist--there were several just last week. I have bought three in the past year off there. The nice thing about old Raleighs, IMO, is that they seem to be undervalued, perhaps because there are so many more of them than other vintage bikes. I love the two I have. Very well made.

If you are in NYC, PM me an email address, and I'll shoot any links I find your way (I'm a compulsive scanner of the sale boards, but no longer interested in purchases.)
