Schwinn paramount odd not classic

Ok so its made in japan but I like it none the less. The Tange Prestige OS tubing is really nice.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the unique paint scheme. It doesn't have a series designation like PDG 5, 7 etc its just red white and blue. I'm upgrading it to campy veloce and just finishing up the build. But in the mean time I was hoping to get a little history about the paint job.

Thanks

I think that's 1993 (maybe considered "Team" colors?). My 1990s catalogs are buried in the shed, so that's about all I can tell you ... (boy, that was vague).

I recently bid on one on eBay that looked identical to yours. The seller called it a 1991 Desert Storm comemorative paint job.

OK, of that I'm almost 99.9% sure it isn't. Someone on eBay called it that a year or so ago and now almost every one that comes up again calls it the same thing. Playing on patriotism or some such thing. You'd think if that were true it would be proclaimed loudly with a decal set or something. Just eBay hype ...

I'll see if I can find that catalog when I get home.

I have a '91 paramount OS mountain bike with exactly the same paint job - it was top of the line with suntour grease guard...also made with tange os. I raced an '88 for a couple of years before that had a very similar red/white/blue paintjob. I suppose that was the commemorative Falklands invasion paint scheme?

Luker,

Is this it? There are no specific comments on the paint scheme in the '91 Paramount catalog.

1991 Paramount Series 90 MTB
- Lightweight alloy SunTour XC Pro Crankset and Grease Guard System
- Tange/Prestige Short-Butted CR-MO Double-Butted MTB tubeset

Interestingly, the '91 Paramount catalog doesn't show this paint scheme on any of the road bikes but I'd be willing to bet there were some.

OK ... the 1991 Paramount catalog only lists complete bikes as the Series 3 in Candy Blue and Series 5 in White with Grey Splatter. All other Paramount road bikes were sold as frames only in custom ordered colors (11 of them, 4 with the word "Neon" in front). There is a Candy Red and an Intense Red, a White, and a Candy Blue. The catalog only shows pics of a few bi and tri-color fades in lovely early-90s color combos (yellow/purple and purple/lime/white and a mountain bike in orange/yellow/lime). No special "Commemorative" issues.

The Series 90 MTB is in R/W/B, but isn't listed as "Team" or "As used by the troops" or anything either.

https://home.mchsi.com/~lhufford/91series90.jpg (1406935 bytes)

The prices sheet lists no special coloring or issues either.

Hope that helps ...

Yeah. That's the one. I bought it new old stock from a bike shop in Fla last spring. Still in the original packing, original hang tags. I hate NOS. It hangs in my garage and I haven't ridden it for fear of scratching something. I have a NOS Kimber 45 factory custom in bright blue with gold-plated fittings and pearl handles (I inherited it from my father. I think he may have been a pimp part-time or something). I dare not rip off a round for fear of spoiling it's value, either.

I'm fairly certain that th 90's were the top of the line MTB's. I'll bet that this road bike is the top as well...I can't tell what the parts mix is. Can you post some closeups?

Hey guys thanks for all the info. pretty sexy mountain bike. Umm the group that came with it was pretty much 105 with ofmega cranks a duraace seatpost bianchi quill stem but the original paramount handlebars. The couple I bought it from used it as a trainer bike. what a shame its cleaned up pretty decent definately not NOS thank goodness. I think when I'm done it will be close to 20lbs. debating whether to replace the fork with a carbon fork. Or maybe just have a carbon fork repainted like the original.

I saw the "desert storm" comment in the past and I didn't buy it back then. I always lusted after the wheaties team paramount now that was sexy

Dan - out of the blue I remembered this piece of trivia...if the seatpost is a 27.4 size, that is a Waterford-made frame...

ah, yeah. I'm used to looking at 'em so they don't seem odd to me...that was Schwinn's answer to chainslap. And some vaguely hetchinsesque marketing.

But the chainslap thing is a real solution to a real problem, without adversely affecting the rest of the machinery...of course the chainstays on my mountain bike today are part of a machine that does a lot of other stuff besides holding the rear wheel...

I did quite the double take when I first saw those chainstays. An interesting solution indeed to a problem. I've got a pair of rims and hubs sitting here that are waiting for another mtb build, but fear now that I've aquired a second road bike that my finacee will make me sleep in the spare bedroom in the apartment if I try to put yet another bike in that spare bedroom (which is also going to be study, computer and practice room for her).

I realize I'm dropping in on a very old thread here. I used to have this bike and I loved it! But lucky me, it was stolen. I recently bought a new bike that conjured up memories of this one. I miss it. I went looking for info (perhaps deep down maybe wanting to see one for sale) and was surprised that there is not much out there on it. In any case, I happened to stumble accross this pdf file of a vintage French biking magazine. It seems to go into quite a bit of detail on the 1991 Paramount PDG 90, and its colors. But alas, I don't speak any French. Anyone want to translate?
