new wheels worth it?

I have a 80s Univega Viva Sport and I'm wondering if it is worth it to go for 26" wheels? I have the original 27" right now.

If it's made for 27" wheels, the smallest you'll want to use would be a 700c. 26" will give you problems with brake reach.

If I was replacing the wheels with anything but original, I would just go with the 700's it's pretty much the standard and easier to replace the parts.

OTH, 27"ers are cheap, the tires are very cheap, and if you're using the bike for commuting or city riding, they're far less targeted by thieves.

Replacing the parts would be tires, I assume, and it's not hard to find those. Everything else on a 27" wheel can be found on a 700c wheel. If you switch to 700cs, you have to worry about your brake reach: 4mm lower for your pads.
