Mavic 7 speed index down tube levers question
I bought a set of these a few years ago for the Masi thinking they were the retrofrictions. The front shifter is but the rear is an index only 7 speed with no friction over-ride. They're from the early 1990's I think. Very well made. The problem is that my bike has a 6 speed Regina America freewheel, I have left them on and ridden with them but its awkward because you have to overclick and hunt to find your gear. They are very positive and I wonder: If I found a Shimano s.i.s. 7 speed freewheel and a used s.i.s. Shimano rear derailleur would this be a better match? Or are these Mavic shifters only for a Mavic indexed derailleur (really hard to find and expensive too when they come up on ebay).

The spacing was different - S. Brown details the differences somewhere on his pages - but with the older stuff, most of the Indexing function was the relationship between the shifter and the freewheel. I'd try a seven-speed freewheel first, and then worry about the derailleur if the shifting is still crappy.
footnote: this most certainly isn't the case with 9 speed, and more than likely 8 speed. The arc that the rear derailleur travels is pretty specifically tuned to match the shifters. Now that we are at 10 speed clusters, the arc of the rear derailleur is so miniscule that the brands can again be jumbled up...hoohoo, a campy rear derailleur with shimano brifters, I can hardly wait to **** the roadies with that setup...

Masi, it sounds like you might be looking for a seven speed freewheel from the early 90's. Regina made a "Syncro '92" that would be perfectly suitable, that is if Mavic and Regina are sympatico. Perhaps someone who knows the answer to this will chime in.
What cog range freewheel are you currently running on your ride?

The Mavic indexing system was Shimano compatible. A Shimano or Sachs 7 speed freewheel should work fine. Anything else that works with Shimano should, in theory, also work.
I do *not* know, however, if it has takeup that corresponds to a DA rear derailleur, or to the rest of the contemporary Shimano line. If you're using a Mavic rear derailleur, it should be a non-issue. Otherwise you may need to just give it a try with what you have.
