RD Compatibility Questions
I am looking at the many used RDs on ebay that might work with my Schwinn Traveler, but I could use some help/advice making sure the one I get will work.
The chainrings and crank are the original, one piece (ashtabula) style. The large chainring has 52 T and 39 T on the small. The new flywheel is 14-28. The shifters are the original friction shifters and I am looking at some NOS Shimano 600 downtube friction shifters that are also up for sale on ebay. And there is one NOS Shimano 600 RD and FD set for sale...
I did some buy new brake levers and calipers. They are also NOS Shimano 600 and, hopefully accurate, they will work with the new 700c tires. Of course the brakes are now worth more than the whole bike
Thanks everyone!
Kevin

A shimano 600 will work fine, both front and rear. You don't need NOS, unless they are a good deal...you can buy good used ones for a lot less.

Thanks Luker. I think, comparing prices on ebay, that so far I've done fine. As for the RD, anything to avoid or will any of the ones that say 7,8,9 speed work?

Any RD will work with friction shifters. You'll have to set the limit screws to avoid overshifting.
