Hi,
I am seeking a 69cm (c-c) lightweight, steel, bike/frame. By lightweight, I mean either a 531 or other Reynolds frame, or, a VALite frame. Don't care for aluminum or carbon.
I have two 67.5 Fujis and the ride is great! A friend asked me why I go for those gawd-almighty big frames, to which I replied: "It's like the reason anyone does anything in this life: 'I can and it feeels good.' "
Thanks, Jim near Baltimore

That's one big frame. Have you considered a custom frame maker?

Dang man, you must be like 6''8" or something.

I have nothing to add, except this:

Good luck, man. I've never seen a bike that big before.

I'm 6'5" and I just got an old Schwinn Traveler from 1980; stock frame produced in Japan, 67cm seat tube with 62cm top tube. Here's a shot of it next to the frame of my 62cm Miyata that I use for commuting:

And here's a shot of it built up into a fixed-gear.

Rivendell makes the Atlantis, Rambouillet and Quickbeam all in a 68cm frames. These are all stock frames sizes, no need to get a custom.

Yeah, but Rivendell costs like a custom - I could get custom frames from reputable builders for less than a Riv frame. Which doesn't mean that Rivendell isn't worth it. I'd love to have one of their bikes.

And anyway, beaver seems to be asking for some very specific stuff. My guess is that he's not just looking for a big frame, but rather a big vintage frame.

If he's looking vintage only for budget's sake, Soma builds a nice road sport bike (the ExtraSmoothie) in a 66cm frame, with a 62cm top tube and 25cm head tube. And it runs for $475 for frame/fork.
Honestly, at 6'3" with long legs, I don't think he should get a bike this big, unless it has a relatively short top tube. If his 6'3" frame has legs long enough to need a really long seat-tube, then his torso can't be very long...

I have that same exact size 80' blue traveler. I am 6'6" myself. But, the BB threads on the drive side are stripped out. But, I also found a later Le Tour (late 85) that is huge also (pics below). It has a 67c-c seat tube and 61 c-c top tube. I was planning to make it into a fixie, but might just redo it. I also have a more normal sized 86 Peloton that is a much nicer bike. I might use the Le tour as a bad weather rider with full fenders. I haven't made up my mind yet.

Panasonic built their DX2000 in a 28" frame which would be a 70cm. I sold one back in 87 or 88 to a guy that was 6'9" and all legs.

el twe,

The good Lord had nothing to do with Schwinn building huge frames--- customers who would purchase them did--- unless we need to talk about who created tall people in the first place. Thanks for watching your typing in future posts.

Thanks,

Bob

https://www.zinncycles.com/bikes.aspx?bike=road He has some interesting things to say about cranks too, I believe he makes bikes with much higher bottom brackets to accomodate his custom made much longer cranks (over 200mm). Basically for a tall person spinning a way bigger circle and a higher bottom bracket has the same center of gravity? Check it out

@#%damn… Jim Redcay made huge frames! (Sorry Reverend.) Look at the headtube on that thing! I prefer a 66cm and finding good quality bikes that fit is difficult, but possible. Here is my list:

1972 Schwinn Continental: 66cm
1972 Lygie: 66cm
1974 Raleigh Super Course: 65cm
1979 Woodrup Giro Touring: 66cm
2004 Mercian Custom: 66cm

The Mercian I had built, but the rest I’ve picked up over the years; two from eBane.

Do you tall guys not find spinning minature circles annoying? Seriously I wish I could afford custom, I am going to 185mm cranks or longer and I am just shy of 6'4". I should be riding something like 193-203mm according to the range of estimate I have found. It's not a wonder the best cyclists fall into a heigh and weight range that is very specific. Bikes are designed for them. Can you imagine if they were able to scale a bike properly for us tall guys? Our potential would be greatly increased I think. That huge frame on ebay with 175mm cranks seems like a huge waste. Why not spend the money on a frame with a heigher BB. I think it is worth the extra dough. I will be moving to a crank either 185mm (because they are easy to get) or custom 195mm, the problem is clearance on my 63cm frames,I could ride a 66 but I don't think it is necessary. In addition I am seeking bone surgery because I have a leg length discrapancy. Shortening the long femur is looking more and more desireable. I would really like to generate some discussion on this. Why do the top manuafacturers only offer their top cranks in 180 (i.e. record and durace), because it is more expensive for them to make cranks in a larger range and the sales of the big cranks just wouldn't be enough. That is why their is a niche market for people like Zinn, TA, and High Sierra. Tall guys.. Your thoughts?
