Saronni ?

hi all.

just thought id share a frame i just won on ebay with you. its a 57cm Saronni featuring Columbus tubing. i have a few questions about it. firstly, what year is it? and is it one of the bikes that was made bo Colnago in Italy?

the ebay link is:
https://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....B:EOIBSA:AU:31

also, would there be any problems building this sort of frame up with a 10s veloce groupset

I'd only be guessing as to the year, but mid-'80s seems about right for the paint and crimped tubing...very nice frame and very good price, congratulations! Secondly, my understanding is that Ernesto Colnago never actually built his own frames, at least not during most of his business years, but had a couple of master contractors that built for him and to his specs...some 'Nago experts will chime in here regarding them and their names, I don't know if Sarroni was one of them, but the quality of this frame speaks for itself, with or without the Colnago association. Last, yes you will have to have the rear triangle spread to accomodate the wider axle needed for 10 speed rear gears, but a good shop can do that on a steel frame...but consider building it with mid-'80s components, or maybe '90s stuff, you might find you like it just fine.

A beautiful bike, congratulations.

That is columbus Gilco, and that plus the paint job would bracket this frame to the late 80's - early 90's, I think. Gilco was only used on top of the line bikes; I think this was post-Colnago. https://bulgier.net/pics/bike/Catalogs/colnago/03.jpg is an early '80's Saronni/Colnago, which looks to my eye like a super with different engravings.

This https://bulgier.net/pics/bike/Catalog...ago-88/06a.jpg looks like your bike in profile and tubing detail, though, so it could be...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giuseppe_Saronni is a nice description of the man.

There should be no problem with veloce, except I think you must plan to cold set the rear stays if you want the ten-speed wheel to drop in and out.
