Found a local miyata 912 - it has dura ace components (not original from what i've gathered so far - didn't they come with shimano 600, or is that the same?), and looks to be in pretty good shape. Probably going to go check it out this afternoon, but they want $300 for it. I was thinking I'd be ok with $250 if it fits and is in really good shape. Does this seam reasonable for this bike? I think I read they were originally $500-$600 somewhere.

I have a Miyata 914 frame that I bought for $50. Also an '86 Miyata "Team" (aka One-Ten) with full 80s Campy Chorus group...got that one for $300.

I'd have to know some more details to decide how good the deal is. The 912 was produced over about an 8 year span with tubing that ranged from Tange DB to Miyata spline triple butted. The Dura Ace group is a substantial upgrade over the original 600 group in terms of collectibility and since it's a upgrade could be just about any Dura Ace group ever produced. Stock 912 were as high as $1000 US, depending on the exact year, with the Dura Ace upgrade adding a big premium. Provided it's in good condition and ydepending on your local market conditions $300 may be fair and could even be a real bargain depending on the exact year and Dura Ace group invovled.

Well, I went ahead and bought it, for $265. It may need new tires (rubber is cracked all around), but everything seems to be in pretty decent shape, given its a 20+ year old bike. Rides pretty nice I think, and has the usual paint blemeshs too. The rear derailleur, shifters, crankset have been upgraded to dura ace, pretty much the whole drive train except the front derailleur. The serial number is J396102 - I hear there is a local expert :) that might be able to find an exact year (early 80s i'm pretty sure). I'm still absorbing bike component info, but if I'm correct, the date code on the crankset is EG, which is 81?

Hey, do I see rust bubbles on the BB? You might want to pull everything apart to inspect and repack the bearings. I'll bet it's a sweet riding bike!

BTW, I just got back from Performance. They have their house brand 27" and 700cx25 tires on sale for $5.97. Tubes are $1.97, as well. I bought a bunch......

The frame is from 1981. The crankset, pedals and shifters are from the early 1980s, Dura Ace EX 7200 series, but the rear derailleur appears to be a late 1970s version (DA-100). The crankset date code is July 1980. I can't quite tell from the pics, but the front derailleur appear to be 600EX, in which case it is probably original. The pictured rim is original, so the hubs may be also. The Edge brake is about 1990.

700x25 is backordered until 10 March, but I ordered two sets anyway. I've been waiting for nashbar to drop the cheap Hutchsons down to $4.97 again, but all they have is 700x23 and 28 and i'm tired of waiting.....

It's a somewhat odd collection of parts - I don't have any history on the bike either.

I think I'll probably just ride it as is (except for new tires and some minor maintenance work) for now. The thought of turning it into a SS had entered my mind, or maybe eventually upgrading the drivetrain to index shifting.
