New Wheels for an old bike

I have a 1985 Trek 520 and noticed the rear wheel is shot. It's a 5 speed with a Maillard Helicomatic Hub. From what I've read here this is poor design and not worth fixing. So, what do you suggest for a wheel hub combination? I'd like to keep the 36 spokes since I'm a bit of a Clydesdale. I also assume you can't buy off the shelf wheelsets for bikes like this anymore.
