Finding Ferrules...

I have two early 80's frames that I'm building up at the moment. One thing I've noticed about them is that the cable anchor takes a smaller ferrule than recent bikes. Is this typical of older bikes?. Why are there different ferrule sizes in the first place, seems like unnecessary complication.

Also, does anyone have a source for these smaller ferrules(4mm?), all I seem to be able to find round these parts are 5mm ferrules.

If the cable anchor is a good fit for the cable, you may not need ferrules. I have seen several bikes like that, with both the frame and components not needing ferrules because the cable fits neatly into the anchors.

I tried that, it stripped the cable, although it wasn't exactly a good fit. Even if it is a tight fit, won't you just end up with stripped cables?

Have you tried end caps for SIS cable? SIS cable is available in both 4 & 5mm.

If this is for a brake cable, the hole in a gear cable ferrule may be a bit small, but can easily be drilled out.
