    3 Speed Tour, Anyone Going?

The Lake Pepin 3-Speed Tour is on this weekend just south of Minneapolis. Is anyone going. http://www.3speedtour.com/ I was there 2 years ago and will be there this year. I wll also be taking my 16 year old son with me. It is one of the best rides you could go on. Tom

Jane and I will be there. Please don't laugh at our handlebar setups. We both have bad lower backs and she has elbow, hand and wrist problems while I have arthritic hands and I'm trying to get my shoulder to last till winter before having surgery.

We found we can survive longer rides with North road style bars, mounted in the usual location, and a set of MTB bars, complete with bar-ends about 5" above.

BTW the forecast is not good for next weekend. Sunny with highs in the low '70s. But there is plenty of time for that to improve and give us proper weather for a ride on British iron. "Drizzle punctuated by occasional downpours." Nothing gets the adrenaline flowing like 40 y/o John Bull brake shoes on wet chrome rims.

I learned of the ride over Easter and it looks like a great time indeed. I'm out of town this weekend, but hope to try it next year. First I need to secure a bike, but at least I have a year to find one. Enjoy the ride and stay dry.

If you or anyone else in Minnesota is looking for a 3 speed, Craigslist always has a few. Sometimes quite nice ones.

There is a shop in S. Minneapolis who's owner buys up 3 and 5 speed British bikes and overhauls them in his spare time. Prices IMHO can be very reasonable for a bike that's ready to go. http://sunrise-cyclery.com Jamie's one of the good guys, and several of the bikes on the tour will have come through his shop.
Scroll down through http://www.sunrise-cyclery.com/usedbikes.htm to see his current stock of 3 speeds.

There is quite a "3 Speed Subculture" here. Though some of us more feeble sorts have found the need for the lower gears afforded by 5 speed Sturmeys.

Thanks for the bike shop link. I just recently found this site so I am quite new here. I was also thinking of Hiawatha Cycles as a possibility. I had no idea that 3 speeds were such a hit in this area. The ride really looks fun. I'll source out a bike by next year. At this stage I don't know what to look for in a 3 speed, so I have some boning up to do.

Hiawatha is a good shop that will probably become a great shop. Jim rides a 3 speed and he's building up an 80 year old Bates for a customer to use on the ride. But it's not a place where you are too likely to find a 3 speed. After the ride give me a call at 612-824-2372 and I'll try to help you figure out what to look for.

Another place to look would be the Sibley Bike Depot in St Paul

The ride was great. I was there with my 16 year old son and he had fun. The people are a good bunch of bikers. I don't think there is a better ride around. The scenery is also beautiful. It was worth the day long car ride to get there.

Jane and I were on the bikes with the double handlebars. As ridiculous as they looked, without them our decrepit old carcasses never would have survived over 80 miles on a non-recumbent.

Weather was grand, and so was the company. People came from as far away as California. So if you are in Mpls., you have no excuse next year.
