It's great that there is something out there for everyone. I remember my first bike that my Mom bought at Montgomery Ward in the late 30s. (Hawthorn) It had all that junk that I liked. Spring forks, headlight, horn, fenders, rack in the back with lights, & even whitewall tires. My Mom gave the guy $30 & got back a little change. I don't remember how long it took, but I eventually pulled off all that stuff to make it lighter. ha ha ha

Well, I'm going on 77 years old & I guess I'm back in my childhood again, because I just bought a Schwinn Cruiser 7 with all that stuff on it plus a hub shifter. I don't think I'll strip this one down.

Happy cycling.

Wow...just think if you still had that late '30's Hawthorne...in "like new" condition it would be worth a small fortune...but, odds are that your new Schwinn Cruiser is about twenty pounds lighter, and much more enjoyable to ride. The only time I feel even vaguely as young as I did forty years ago is when I riding a bike, and no bike makes you feel younger than a cruiser. If every American adult spent thirty minutes a day on a beach cruiser, shrinks would be out of a job.

My 1970 Schwinn Racer is my primary bike now (I sold off the Bianchi, aluminum peice of crap). I've put a ton of miles on the Racer, including commuting most days and a double century last feburary.

Since I picked up the '72 chrome Paramount on eBay in March, all the other bikes have been pretty much neglected. I'm enjoying the hell out of it.

I ride a late 40's early 50's vintage Gino Bartali. I had it repainted and a newer fork installed after a former yahoo teamate bent the original forks. Its my fixer now, but i bought it originally in 1977 when i was a junior just breaking into bike racing. It was a mishmash of parts and a high flange tubular wheelset. I still have all those old parts in a box somewhere. Still got the wheels too, but i think they may be too unsafe to ride now. The spokes are as brittle as uncooked vermicelli.

1987 schwinn prelude. I'll post pics.

It's the ultimate commuter bike. Mavic 531 hub/Mavic MA-40 rims rear with megarange 34 7 speed. chicago schwinn with Columbus Tenax tubing.
rear rack. Vetta SL seat. Mavic A719 front/shimano 105 hub. Modern Deore LX rear dearilleur. Stock Sugino cranks w/cyclone front derailleur. Friction shifters baby. Scott bullhorn handlebars. Weinnmann 999 & 650 centerpulls pulled by Tektro MTB brakes.

This rig hauls 40+ lb groceries from Trader Joe's every week. I took it on a ride to Tijuana recently without any problems. It's the most reliable bike I have. I have an 1984 Centurion Elite RS, but after I crashed on it. I haven't ridden on it recently.

1979 Peugeot U-something, might have been a touring bike, given to me by the original owner when she went recumbent. [That sounds like she died; I mean she now rides one of those I-beams with a lawn chair on top.] This bike was my city "car" for five years, and is now my recreational road-bike. Few original components left except the brakes, downtube shifters, and one crank. The stem & bars are from an '81 Peugeot though, so they look right (and although I'm far from a restoring purist, I'm shopping eBay for NOS Simplex derailleurs, they just *look* better on an old French bike). New alloy wheels handbuilt by a friend when the original Rigidas became un-trueable. This bike is good for at least another quarter-century!

1973 Raleigh Sports. I ride it almost every weekend for fun and to do routine errands. I probably ride it more than my '02 TREK 1000 road bike. I'm in the midst of renovating a Univega Super Strada (1980's ?) that my son-in-law was going to throw away; it has Shimano Dura-Ace everything. Frame is 63cm and might be a little big for me, TREK is 58cm, but it might be OK.

In its day it came with wooden rims. When I got it, it came with 28 inch steel rims Coaster brake. [ 50,s]

My daily driver (everyday, year-round) is a 72 Peugeot PE-42 3-speed. It's also the bike I pick my daughter up from school on and I run grocery errands on it. It's my utility bike!

Holy back from the dead, Batman!

I have four regular riders that I trade off... I'll ride a bike for a week or two at a time, then switch to another one. They represent four decades, and I consider them all regular riders: 1994 Nishiki hybrid, 1983 Raleigh Marathon, 1973 Schwinn Varsity and a 1966 Raleigh DL-1.

I enjoy my '78 Olmo Competition. Those Schwinn Paramounts' look fantastic and the Hetchins is quite something not to forget the wonderful Legnano above. You really can't compare the modern carbon fibers with the stunning and classic steel offerings.

I ride my '75 Peugeot mixte most days. With nitto dove bars and a B67, it has a great upright feel.

I gave the '56 Claud Butler to my buddy; it fitted him better. The Jackson and Flying Scot take care of summer and winter needs (both early '70's 531).
