What Vintage is this Miyata 912?
I just was given a 53 cm Miyata 912 and I have no idea what era it is. SN#I187179 It has a complete Shimano 600 componant group, clamp-on downtube shifters, 600 hubs w/ oil clips, SR Leprade seat post, brazed-on bottom bracket cable guides. OK, I see there are previous threads on similar bikes. Would the "I" make it an 81? It really is a pretty nice bike. I was thinking about making a commuter/cross bike out of it for my wife. The level of cosmetic detail on the 600 parts are really pretty amazing and I really like the machined aluminum headset nuts. It needs an overhaul, tires and a new seat, but otherwise it's in fair shape. Any ideas?

My '84 Miyata catalog has the 912 available in silver with a red head or black with a silver head. The specs seem to match your bike.

I only have a 1984 catalog because I have a 1984 six-ten and I picked up a catalog while I was in the bike shop collecting my new bike (in 1984).
But since the specs match, maybe it's a 1983 or a 1985.
T-mar will eventually answer this question with the correct answer.

Could be 1981 or 1082 based on the serial number. If the headset and brakes are 600EX them it's from 1981. If not, then it's a 1982.
