Bikes: Purchased a Soma "Speedster" in May '08 to replace my cludged-together Peugeot "UO-8" with alloy upgrades which will be up for sale on craigslist in the near future.

How old is my Peugeot UO-8

I have a Peugeot UO-8 that I am refurbishing and would like to know the date of manufacture. There is a number stamped into the left rear dropout that is, if I'm reading it correctly, "1189129", and on the BB is stamped "R (+ something that looks like a slash, one, or I) F4".

Here are the rest of the specs:
Frame: White with black outlined white lugs. Brazed-on flat frame pump clips on down tube.
Forks: White with half-chromed blades and a chromed crown.
Cranks: Cottered steel Nervar with 52/40 chainrings.
Derailers: Simplex Prestige (red badge) in the rear and Simplex in the front.
Brakes: Mafac "Racer".
Saddle: Leather Chatillonnaise 28A.
Hubs: High flange Normandy with Atom QR skewers
Rims: 27"x1.25" steel Rigida "Chroluxe".
Accessories: aluminum Ventoluxe frame pump which was appearantly standard equipment during the time (red and blue bands on the handle).
The bike, although dirty, is in pretty good shape and all parts are original (I think) and functioning. Thanks.

1971 (7-digit s/n beginning with 1)

Other hints: downtube shift lever boss, discontinued in 1973 or 1974; decals are circa 1970

Thanks, John E. Not only did that answer my posted question, but it also allowed me to determine the model year of my son's PR-10 (1977). I was suprised that the lugs on my UO-8 are from 1971. I've always thought of that style (I call it the "Thunderbird" style because of the shape of the cutouts) as being more mid- to late 70s. Man, I love this place!

Those distinctive "Thunderbird" lugs date back at least to 1970:

Sorry, the lugs are hard to see in this lo-res photo, but trust me, they are identical to yours.

I am still trying to figure out the difference between the PR-10 and the PKN-10, which replaced it in 1978 or 1979.

CalTex,

I have the same bike. I switched out the steel cranks with an old set of alloy cotterless this spring - HUGE improvement - lighter, quieter, better looking. The UO8 is kind of a nice bike if you lose the steel cranks.

Another huge improvement for the U08 is to replace the steel Rigida rims with lightweight alloy 700c wheels.

CalTex,

Mimi, my '68 or '69 U08, looks the same in every detail I can see from the picture BUT for the headbadge. She only had a decal of the Lion, not the plastic solid piece shown on yours. For my tastes, I have always thought the "Aztec" cut outs on the lugs (your "Thunderbird") looked as good if not better than the PX-10's painted scallop-shaped lugs.

I have a similar appearing UO8, but also with the decal head badge. There is no serial # on the bb, but there is a 4-digit serial # on the drop out. Any ideas as to the significance of this?

I like those, they're purty. One in green would just be fantastic, I'd think. You don't really see them here - lots of 80's Peugots, in that mettalic white satin finish with the yellow and orange stripes, but they don't really float my boat. And seldom a Mercier or a Gitane. Could it be that America took to French bikes sooner? Or did our weather just rust the crap out of them?

"1971 (7-digit s/n beginning with 1)"

John, I don't think that works with the older plate s/n. For instance, I have a 1973 PX10e, identifiable by the nervex lugs, location of the 531 sticker, and frame geometry (given these three variables, it can only be this year). In addition, I have the original reciept for the bike, dated dec. 1973. The bike's s/n does not have a single 3 anywhere, let alone at the start. I know that method works with the s/n s on paper, as Peugeot did later in the 70s.

I would put the bike about 1973. The headbadge is a match to the UO I have I've dated to 1973 (it's yellow, which I'm unsure was available prior to that, no s/n plate extant).

I'm only a fan of white Peugeots, but I hear ya regarding the 80s models. Just too flashy for my tastes. And I also agree with you on the Merciers. Where did they all go? I remember lusting after them in the early 70s even while riding my PX-10. I'd love to get my hands on one of those Nervex-lugged beauties and fix it up.

In 1975 our then youngest son had a red Mercier, and dad had first an A-08 then went upscale to a '75 PX-10. Hated the white paint job, so painted it black with gold outlining on the lugs.
