Anyone Know What Type Of Bike This Is ? edit - Now Solved its an ALLIN Stan Butler
Hall all.jpg
Nervex.jpg
Hall Seat post s.jpg
Hall chainring2.jpg
Hall dropouts2.jpgNervex lugs, Nervex stamped on bottom bracket, Mavic rims on Campy hubs, Dura ace gears, SR crank, sticker reads
"built by J.M. Hall, Craigavon" but I think this is just the bike shop that assembled the bike,
It is in pretty bad shape, but is complete, would it be worth saving ? Anyone know what type of bike it is ?
Thanks
Rab
edit- I now know that the bike is a 1964 Allin Stan Butler, which was upgraded by J M Hall in craigavon in the `70`s

Wow, did you pull that out of the dump? Very worth saving, you can bet it's reynolds 531. What does the downtube say?

The bike has been lying in my fathers shed for about 15 years, it was given to him by a guy he used to do house repairs for, the guy told him that it was an Alan bike, but as far as I know all Alan`s were aluminium framed, he also said that he had had it repainted at some time, so none of the decals are original, the only decal that is on the seat tube is a Dura Ace sticker.

Alan is an italian marque, all Aluminium frames.
There is something about that bike that say "Constructeur" to me,
along the lines of Herse, Singer, Routens, Delcroix. . .
maybe it's the racks, fenders etc. but it looks like a classic
french Randonneur bike.

how much do you want to bet you are going to have to cut that post out. Now would be a good time to buy a jab saw if you don't already have one.

Solved It !!!!!
My father has managed to contact the original owner on the phone and has solved the Alan problem,
its not an Alan, as I already new, the confusion came from the spelling of the name.
Its an Allin, by A.H. Allin of Croyden England, the model is a Stan Butler, it was built in 1964

Unbelieveably cool find. After reading the article, it would be a crime not to clean it up. If it is a 1964 frame, as your source says, a bunch of the components have to have been added significantly later (definitely the rear derailleur and the pedals, probably the cranks), although those brakes look like period-correct old-time Universal 51 sidepulls (what we would consider normal length calipers on the front, what we would consider ridiculously long calipers on the back).
Don't get me wrong, I am not a period-correct purist - I have no beef with folks who are, I just can't afford the cost or time to go that route. However it gets built up, that beauty deserves to be ridden again. It has too much history not to be, IMHO.

From the pictures, it dosent look like it will take too long to get it clean again.
When I got my Raleigh, it was marked down to a lower price because of its condition. Nothing mechanical, just the apperance. It looked much like your bike. The picture is after cleaning
A tip I can give is: get a comfortable area to work, and the work will go by faster, and it will be less draining.

That's a very cool find. If I were you, I would join the Classics Rendezvous discussion list, where you will certainly find out more about that bike.

Yeah, check out sheldon brown's stuck seat post guide cause I bet you're gonna need it. I had a terrible time with my aluminum seat post that was rusted in, but I kept spraying ammonia in there with a spray bottle until it dissolved the aluminum oxide and we were able to take a really big monkey wrench and pry it off. Scratched up the seat post bad, but at least we got it out.

Seat Post is out ! it was quite well siezed in, but after removing the seat I was able to remove one of the barrel nuts in the head of the seatpost, I put a steel bar through this hole and was able to get a little twisting motion going, it was very tight at first, but a little release oil and some more twisting seen the post come right out.

WoW !! Just have been speaking in person to the gentleman who owned the bike when new in 1964 !!!
He has most of the original Campy gear that was on the bike when new, its been in a bag in his garage since he upgraded to Dura Ace and SR in 1978 !!! He is going to pass it on to me hopefully this weekend.
I will keep you guys posted !!
Between this news and the seatpost comming out----now I gotta do a resto !!

NOW YOU ARE JUST RUBBING IT IN!!!!
You have to love it when a plan comes together like this...
You have a project that you will remember fondly for as long as you live.
I will take full credit for wishing you good luck on the project...

Wow, I really like this bike and the story that goes along with it. Fun. Am I the only one who loves the fenders on it? They don't make them like that anymore; if you don't use them, let me know
