touch up paint
what's the best way to obtain a small amount (4oz) of matching touch up paint for a bicycle?
can you simply match the color swatches at your local hardware store to the frame, and then get them to mix an enamel? would it be better to do this at an auto parts store?
i'm looking to touch up small scratches on a new frame that i'm acquiring, and plan to use a pinstriping brush. however, i'm not confident enough in my ability to mix something like lettering enamel to the right color.

I tried "color matching" some paint for an old Raleigh with some Dupli-color at an auto parts store. Basically, the guy looked at my bike at the shiniest point and compared that to the tops of the cans of dupli-color. It seems like good paint, but I'm not impressed at the color match, at all. I've recently come to the conclusion that it's probably just best to eye it, then get it on quickly. Waiting to try and get it perfect just encourages rust.
One point: I used spray paint cans and some masking tape. I do like the uniformity of the color. You might want to try and get your hands on an airbrush of some sort, so you can get a smaller spray pattern.

If you can find a close enough match, Testors model paint (enamel) form a hobby shop works well from a brush. I did just that for one of my old rides.

Most auto paint supply stores can match any color, almost perfectly. About $20 for a spray can of the color match, probably cheaper without the spray can.

If you're talking about small dings and chips from gravel etc, the thing to do is use clear nail polish. See cv-6 above.
