This COLNAGO needs some id

Anyone knows what model of Colnago this is?? What year is it from? When I bought it, it was mounted with Colnago-pantographed brake levers and seatpost.
Look at the upper tube. It ain't a circle. Does that have a particular Colnago-patented name??

I'm having a tough time seeing it from your picture. Might the top tube be oval? If so, that style of tubing is called "ovalized" (or "ovalised" if you're in the UK or Commonwealth) . I don't know if this is what you wanted to know or not. If you want to know about Colnagos, you'll have to find out from someone else who knows what they're talking about.

I've never known Colnago to paint over the embossings on their seat-stays or fork crowns; could it be a re-paint?

edit: I just re-clicked the close-up of the rear stays and this is very likely a re-painted frame....it is very messy there and it is almost impossible to make out the "Colnago" stamped in the drops, something the company would never allow. Also, it appears that there is a darker red under the paint where the paint has flecked away.

You're probably right, Sanchez, it might be a repaint. There's no Columbus sticker!!
And again I checked the Bulgier site, for the 88 Colnago catalog. Could this be a Super Sprint??
But I still need to know what that top tube is. It looks like the Master Columbus Gilco Design (check the last page of the 88 catalog) but there are only 2 overside dents, instead of 4. This child must have a name...

yah look at the reflection in the photo of the seatstay cluster, the reflection forms a sort of
"Y" which to my eye says GILCO.
I would say its one of the master series frames but other than that given the repaint
(I like the wrap around paint mask spirals up/down the tubes) it's difficult to pin
down an exact model.

I would say that it is a Colnago "Mexico". The crimped tubing eventually evolved into the "gilco" shaped, drawn tubing used on the various "Master" models.

I agree, that it could have been repainted, although the mesh/fade areas are very typical 1980's Colnago, and look factory to me.

Nice bike!

On a second closer look, I would say that it is the original paint. The fill colors are generally put on top of the clearcoat (if there is one) and you can see plenty of white left in the cutouts. It always came off with regular cleaning.

Been a while since this thread saw any action(one week)........I think your frame is a Master since it only has the "squarish" top tube. From what I've been told and seen, the Mexicos' tubing had/s indents on the top and bottom tubes which make up the main triangle. The Masters only had it on the top tube. I base this off my Colnago Mexico Oro and my friends Master. Hope that helps.

Well, since I've seen many of your posts regarding Colnagos, and which it seems to me that you know more about them; do you agree with what I said regarding the frame of the OP and of the indents on the Mexicos and Masters? I'm a newbie, but I've been told that from the local LBSs here in Belgium. Also, my French is OK, but I might understand all that they say to me.

I'm pretty sure that's not the full-bore Gilco tubing as featured on the Master. I have a Master Equilateral with Gilco. Most of the frame details say early 80's, probably '82-83. The fluted (rather than flat) seatstay caps and the more fully sloping fork can only have co-existed for a short time, and I think those flutes also strongly suggest pre-Master. That tube crimping, which I'm pretty sure is pre-Gilco, would I think pretty strongly mark the bike as a Nuovo Mexico or possibly a Profil. I will say, though, that I don't know how much models sold in Eurpope may have differed from those sold in the U.S. I would lean maybe a little toward Nuovo Mexico, since I would expect the Profil to have more than one crimped tube, but all kinds of weirdness can show up when it comes to Colnagos of this period. Not their best, quality-control-wise, IMO.
