Ladies Sheffield Free Spirit 3 Speed?
I have a line on this bike to possibly pick up as a neighborhood cruiser for the wife.
Shimano hub, needs tires, otherwise pretty clean. What should I be willing to pay?

This old bike is worth as much as you're willing to pay really.
However, I wouldn't go much over $30 which for an off brand
bike like this which is fair. Either way you're getting your wife
a good everyday ride that will be very easy & cheap to care for.
For the money, if everything works ok, you can't go far wrong
with a bike like this.

Yeah it looks like a Murray built Free Spirit (shimano hub and that handle bar stem give it away).
$30. If it had new tires, I'd go as high as $50, but alas it apparently doesn't.

I hate to dispute the great and wonderous Sheldon "obiwan" Brown ...for $20-30 it is a decent deal. For a short haul neighborhood cruiser. The Free Spririt was the "WalMart" bike of it's generation. I do agree a S-A hub would be much better, but they are getting fewer and harder to find for "reasonable" prices. Also be forewarned the the hub on the Free Spirit is a POS and eventually will fail and be unrepairable. I have had several of these bikes as spares over the years. They worked for what I used them for. Disposable bikes that could be ridden a few miles. If they got stolen no sweat, if they broke I got rid of them.

Gawd you guys. My All-Pro has been in use since the early 70's - and it's Shimano three speed hub type F still functions fine. 30+ years of use and still rolling - it's not a POS, I assure you. I've owned many three speeds, with Sachs, Sturmey, and Shimano hubs - they all work fine.
And for $15 you got a pretty good deal.

HERESY ALERT
When it comes to durability, consider the trigger shifter as well as the hub. I have three SA-equipped bikes in need of shifters, and every Shimano-equipped bike I've ever owned had a good, positive shifter.
I've not had to tear down a Shimano 3CC/333 hub...yet.
Most 3-speed problems aren't in the hub, but the shifter and cable mechanism.

If you open up the Shimano shifter, you can see why it doesn't fail. There are only two moving parts, the lever and the ball that makes the detents.
The SA shifter has as many parts as a clock.
