ok, well that was totally wrong (my previous response, I
should learn to read thread titles).

I don't know if it's intentional or not. There is no
reynolds decal on the bike so I don't think it's hiding
it. I'm guessing the seller is just confused.
Actually the starting bid isn't bad for that bike.

Scroll down...it's partly hidden by the front derailleur. The seller has a high rep so it might be an honest error.

It is under the front derailer. Down low. I am used to seeing the Reynolds stickers up on the seat tube, just under the top tube.

ok, I'm just gonna stop posting altogether. . . .

I don't think he is trying to hide it.
Here is the original Front derailleur decal placement.

and the auction photo:

given the other decal below the 501 decal (tree)
I wonder if this is a respray with incorrect decal placement?

On second thought and when comparing the two
photos I don't think it's respary/placement.
I think the decal is correctly placed but the
shimano 600 fd requires a lower placement and
the band is now on the decal.
I don't think this is purposefully misleading.

I think he is trying to hide it, as he is saying this is a 531 bike in his ad. Plus, that FD looks too low on the tube---probably low just for this photo shoot. I feel sorry for the dude who gets ripped off.

The auction description says it's 531. That's misleading -- because it's not 531.

Whether purposeful or not, I don't know. He might just not know. 501 is not so widely recognized. If I was interested in the bike, I'd e-mail the seller, tell him that it's 501, not 531, and see if he modifies the description. If he doesn't, I wouldn't bid.

The seller recently sold another Trek 560 that clearly has a 531 sticker, although this one looks from the lugs to a bit older (need a Trek expert to confirm).

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ayphotohosting

Based on the seller's feedback (including one recent one where a part was defective and the seller refunded the $160 purchase price), the fact that the 531 sticker shown in this other 560 looks pretty much identical to the part of the sticker tht is showing on the bike the OP pointed out, and the placement of the front derailleur on the subject bike, I have to give the seller the benefit of the doubt on this one. Just my $.02 worth.

Edit - I just looked again - the number on the covered part of the Reynolds sticker on the subject bike sure looks like the "531" numbers on the other sticker, but the "chromealloy" sure doesn't look like the 531's words "butted tubing." I'm going to contct the seller through eBay and let him know about the concerns and see what he or she does about it. Here's hoping he or she moves the FD enough to double check what the sticker actually says.

I just sent the seller a message via eBay's "as seller a question" link. I'll report back if and when I get a response.

wow, you guys are way to willing to see the worst in everyone.

The bike currently being discussed is an 1984, the second bike (yellow white
fade) is an 1986 model and had the
drivetrain replaced by the campy triomphe gruppo.
I think he/she got the bike and sold it as is.
The fact that the previous bike (the 86) was 531
led him/her to assume the 84 was 531 also.

I'd cut them a break especially given the feedback.
and if I had any doubts I'd contact the seller.

One thing I noticed on this auction too is that he starts out his title as a 660 not a 560.

I'm inclined to think it's an honest mistake, and hopefully he'll correct it. No eBay seller who intends to do much business would intentionally describe something wrong in such a manner and hope to get away with it.

Actually, that's only the title description within the description area. The title available for searches starts with "560 Series." Maybe the seller used some previous sale as a template and neglected to edit the "internal" description title.

Yeah, I noticed that, too. My guess: just a typo. If you have ever read one of my posts, you will know why I can sympathize with that. Like I said above, the seller's eBay record bespeaks an honorable seller who understands about doing right by the customer.

We don't need no Trek expert - it's an '84. See vintage-trek.com for brochures for Trek steel bikes from the 80s and 90s. My '84 Trek 520 has the same "windmill" shaped spider on the crankset.

Or is it a helicopter?

Here's the seller's response:

Rich,
Thanks for the email and for the heads up, I went rechecked and removed the front derailleur, found out Reynolds 501, I made the correction already on my listing. I really appreciated letting me know. Thanks and have a great ride. Cheers, Armand

Oh, and as another poster already stated, he pulled the listing and relisted with the correct info. I'd say, chalk this one up to honest mistake, cheerfully corrected.

BTW, the '84 Trek 560 is a nice bike, built around a nice American-made frame. We used to sell them at the LBS where I worked. My good friend still has the one I built for him summer of '84 and it looks great. We went for a 33-mile ride Labor Day and it worked flawlessly.

xanadonot (aka, whoismattclark) bought the Trek off ebay

Hey All,

I bought the Trek off ebay from armjejo68. It was only $125, and I'm very happy with the purchase. Armjejo68 (Armand) is a great seller and has lots of great bikes....I really wanted the Bianchi, but was outbid.

I definitely think it was all an honest mistake. I'm looking at the bike now, and I can't distinguish the Reynolds decal with the Shimano 600 FD in its correct lower position. I love the vintage Ciclomaster IIa that came with the bike, and as he suggested, nothing was wrong with it, it only needed a new battery. I know all the components aren't top quality, but I'm thrilled with their performance thus far.

Bottom line: I picked up the bike locally and talked with him for a while about bikes. He's a good guy, and he's gonna keep a lookout for a good fixie conversion candidate for me.

peace,
MDC

Actually that tree is the sticker of Palo Alto Bicycle shop in Ca. Also too this bike has been on another thread already. If you look at the EBAY ad, it's description is of a Trek 660 which is Reynolds 531. He has the wrong description in his auction.

There's nothing wrong with 501. It's just a little bit heavier than 531. I saw a chart somewhere that said that you're too heavy for 531 frame and should be on 501 if you weigh more than 175 lbs.

I've always thought that the steel Treks were underappreciated.
