Quill stem with long(ish) quill?

Hi all,

I posted about a month ago about the Univega Sportour that I found in my girlfriends basement. Nice bike, it's made a great fixie, but I'm still dialing in the fit. Right now I'm working on the handle bar height.

Here's my question... I need a quill stem with a 90mm extension at about a 73 degree angle (to make it parallel to the ground when it's on the bike). Also needs to be 26mm bar clamp and silver. However, I'd also like to have the stem stick out of the headtube somewhere around 95mm

My first idea was the Nitto Technomic... but I think the 225mm column will be TOO long. After fiddling around a bit, it seems like the headtube will only allow the quill to go in approximately 95 mm, meaning I probably can't use a stem with a column much longer than 180mm.

I've been digging around, but most stems are freakishly short (I'm not THAT flexible) or, like the Technomic, way too long. Also, most online shops don't specify the column length.

Any suggestions for this one? Or am I going to have to abandon the ideas of a stem parallel to the ground and get one with a little rise?

Thanks for the help!

Nick

Edit: I do have a Nitto Dynamic (145mm column). In order to get the bars high enough, I have to have them almost a cm past the "Max height" line. Do you guys think doing that would be a problem? Or would I be alright with it (in which case... I wouldn't need a new stem)?

I know it'll ruin the classic looks, but using a modern a-head stem with an adapter for 1" will increase the possibilities of finding the correct position for you. Well, that's what I did to replace my old 3TTT stem (the bike fit and the fact that getting an ergo handlebar through the old quill stem proved to be impossible)

The Nitto Technomic can be shortened. Just cut it off at approximately the same angle. It doesn't have to be perfect. I took 2" off of a Nitto Dirtdrop and still had pleanty of threads on the bolt. Shortening the bolt is optional.

The Technomic deluxe is 190mm, according to Rivendell.

Rivendell sells a wide selection of Nitto stems, in a variety of heights and lengths. You will be able to get exactly the stem you need.
