What do you suggest I use as a substitute for part 786? This is the non-removable pin which holds the upper arm on the cage. It is unremovable as far as it must be destroyed to be removed. I am rebuilding nuovo record front from parts I have including an NOS no-hole cage.

You're better off buying an NR front mech on eBay - even there they go cheap, and you might be able to snag one for 6 bucks if you find the right auction.

Either that, or trade with a BF'er here.

I've aquired two NR FD's so far: One from a trade, a closed-cage model; the other, a late-model post '77 with open cage holes that I purchased for $10. Did I mention that also in that $10 bargain was an Italian-threaded NR headset, Italian NR BB (cups/spindle/bearings/the works), and a Legnano Gran Premio frameset?

I've done it to swap cages and was able to re-use the pin. The pins are peened over so you must file around the edge of one side before you press them out. You need to make a fixture to support the cage ears then knock the pin out with a drift. The hard part is pressing the old pin (if still useable) or new pin back in. I used a bench vise to press the pin back in using shim stock between the cage ears and the pivot arm to keep them from crushing or getting too tight. The pins were a service part at one time. I asked on the CR list and had replacement waiting for me if I needed it. But like I said the old one was not destroyed and went back in fine. Also, you have to peen over the edge once installed so it will not back out. It sounds harder than it it really is. I was sweating it beforehand but it took about ten minutes and went smoothly.

How about a roll pin from the local HW store?

in this application I don't think a roll pin is a good idea: it's spring steel and meant to be compessed as you drive it in and then it expands to a tight fit. This Campy pin is a smooth pivot surface and so not so tight a fit and needs to be peened at the ends to stay in place, both impossible with a roll-pin.

yes i haven't done it with this specific pin but there are many other bike bits held together with peened pins...
usually i just drive out the pin with a drift and the action basically 'un-peens' the peened end (no filing necessary and it preserves some material)
i drill a hole in a piece of oak to support the part
to reassemble the old pin is driven back in with the drift and the end peened over

i'm sure if you didn't want to go through all this a small bolt would work too

I have already removed the old one and it was destroyed in the process. I tried hammering it with a punch first and it didn't budge. Anyway it is too late now.. I may try the CR list to see if anyone has a replacement. I have a box of NR/SR front derailleurs but all are the 3 hole style and I must have the closed cage for my early 70s bike... I suppose I could try removing the pin from another derailleur but that seems pointless as it renders the other useless. I know I could buy another one but by the time I purchase one and ship it I am out $20. All I am missing is one stinking pin to complete the derailleur so I might as well fix it. Kurt, the closed cage model you aquired is from the bike which this derailleur it destined for.

Try your local hobby shop - one that specializes in radio control cars and airplanes. They often carry carry a line of metal products by K&S Engineering. This company offers aluminum, brass and stainless steel rod in various small diameters. Chances are that Campagnolo engineered the derailleur to use standard diameter bar stock for the pivot pin and it just may match a K&S offering.

No it isn't - the Corky's FD was in such terrible shape, I declined it. It's one of the NR spares that came with Pastor Bob's Paramount. My open-cage came from the Legnano frameset.

alright well i have a parts derailleur with a very worn cage.. i will see if i can get the pin out and then you can have it
