1973 Paramount on eBay - major drool factor

Assuming the story checks out on this - and there is no reason to think it doesn't - this is scary: 1973 Paramount P-13 frame & fork, never ridden (all components solkd as take-offs years ago), albeit not mark-free.

A tad small for me (and likely a tad tall for my current financial situation :( ) so I'm out of the running. But Scooper, looks to be about your size. Or maybe yours, Pastor Bob . . . .

cudak888 12-10-06 08:24 PM

It's not Bob's frame size, not sure about Scooper, but that so happens to be my frame size. Luckily, the ride quality of my '61 is enough to sober me up about buying another one of these over-glorified Paramounts.

Wonder what buisness it is of that fellow with the '64 Paramount to recommend minimum pricing on an auction in progress. The idiot is probably trying to singlehandedly drive up Paramount prices for when he sells his '64...

not as drool worthy as this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/1962-Schwinn-Par...QQcmdZViewItem
look at those bars!

Yeah, that track iron is pretty sweet - but the road frame is a virgin. Not too many 34 year old Paramount virgins out there . . . .

Isn't this Paramount owned by a member here? I recall the story of the guy meeting a person who sold him a Paramount in a parking lot....

Kurt, it's my size, but I've blown my bicycle budget for the next millenium on a custom Reynolds 953 Waterford. I should take delivery sometime in February.

That guy built up his frame and I am pretty sure it was a 62cm (I remember because it was my size)

It is close enough to my size, but I have two Paramounts already, though the painted 72 is less than original. I doubt that it would go for what I would be willing to pay. I'd actually be more interested in a P-10, as both my other ones are P-13's.

Nice frame, though.

I ride those big framed Schwinns! 63 cm. I just clear the top bar with my stand over, but I could use another cm or two in distance between the saddle and the bars. It is a beautiful frame set, but has any one noticed that it is missing the appropriate seat tube decal? A '73 would have the Olympic Rings and rainbow, not just the two rainbow bands. Didn't these decals show up after '78? I wonder if it was repainted?

Bob, I'm pretty sure '73 was the first year the Paramounts didn't have the Olympic Circles decal on the seat tube. The '73 catalog shows them with the Olympic Circles, but none of the actual '73 Paramounts I've seen have them. I think the factory must have used pictures of '72 bikes for the '73 catalog.

Scooper: A younger brother for your Paramounts? And we didn't even know you were expecting.

We will, of course, be expecting pictures and cigars all around when the blessed event occurs.

Of course. :D

It will have essentially the same geometry as my P15, and will be polished 953 with polished Richard Sachs stainless Newvex lugs, so it will look almost like a twin of the chrome P15, only several pounds lighter (I hope). Components will be all new Campy Record.

Sounds like this might be a semi-religious event. Any chance I might be invited to participate?;)

Better than that; when I fly to NH next fall to visit Jack Pratt, I'll bring it with me and you can ride it. :)

BTW, Bob, I got curious about the '73 seat tube decals and found this picture of pitcher Jim Palmer with his Paramount on the front page of the March, '74, issue of The Schwinn Reporter. Attached are photos of other '73 Paramounts I purloined off of the web.

Fortunately, the road bike frame is way too tall for me, and I don't do track bikes. My budget is safe ... :)

Stan,

Bring it along. What a pleasure it will be to see a Waterford up close! I've been down to Harris Cyclery once where I've admired one from a distance. It was a beauty! But the place was packed that day and I was on a tight schedule so I couldn't drool over it!

I can't believe you posted a picture of Jim Palmer on a Paramount! It looks as if he is riding a 63 cm, like mine, but with stem shifters! I was born in Baltimore, my Dad, brothers, etc., all still live in that area. The Orioles were in their hayday during that time and of course Palmer was the big gun on the team. I'm just wondering, what color do you think his Paramount is painted? Probably not coppertone. I've not seen a post '69 Coppertone Paramount. It could be red or Sierra brown. I wonder if we could email Palmer to find out if he still has this bike? ;)

I think the reason they dropped the Olympic rings/colors in '73 and went with just the World Champ colors is that is the year Sheila Young won the World Track Sprints in San Sebastian Spain on a Paramount.

I like the bike pics, but I am trying to figure out what tennis racquet he holding; could be a Wilson T2000 (Conners' racquet of choice at the time). At least I can afford the racquet :)

BTW, Bob could you PM me with your address? Christmas card time, but with the move to the new house, I have misplaced a lot of stuff! There are some 30 boxes in the attic...my advice: if you have been in a house over ten years never move again!! I am also just getting organized enough to get back to BF!

BobHufford 12-12-06 10:16 PM

My address is no secret ... :)

Thanks for thinking of me!

I think I see barcons on there, routed all the way under the bartape? Edit: nope looks like stem shifters, I was decieved by a small white object which looks like it is projecting from the end of the right bar.

...I spotted that illusion coming out of the barends as well, and at first thought the same thing. I went back and edited out "and barends like mine...." :o I kept looking at the picture and finally figured out that those are suicide brake levers peeking out from behind the ends of the bars.

Also, I Googled Jim Palmer and found his agent's website. I requested that they forward my message about the above picture with a link to this thread. If I hear anything, I'll post what I find out.
