    Gorgeous Mercian woman's bike

I went to buy a bike on the weekend. The seller had a beautiful Mercian, traditional style, blue, white lug lining. It was a short-top tube on a 20.5" frame, Reynolds 531.

I'll try to post a photo, but really, the photo didn't do it justice.

It's in the UK, and the seller only wants 275 sterling for it. If it had fit me, I might have bought two bikes.

    In Hull.

I bought the fat-tyred mercian. Rides like a dream, lively and comfortable. Not sure about the fat tyres, might put some 1.3 contact sports on her.

Currently, she looks like this http://www.mvsara.co.uk/Prettybik.htm

Oh, oh, yes. That's right. I have a Mercian mixte from the 60's (I think) which is also gorgeous.

It's the details on the build that are so impressive. The rear brake cable is routed inside the top tube. I phoned Mercian to buy some Framesaver, worried about the amount of rain that would make it's way in via the cable holes in the top tube. They informed me that there is a copper tube joining the cable holes, so rain can't get in - also make cable replacement easier.

I didn't think there were rear rack bosses. There are - they are on the inside of the seat stays, hidden away. etc, etc. Just so lovely.

For those who think steel is heavy, I estimate that this bike, as is (with fat tyres), is about 6-7 pounds lighter than my Dawes 7005 Al-framed hybrid.

The top tube is 22.5", about 56-57cm. Quite long. The chainstays are also longish.

She is great, haven't had much chance to ride her yet. I won't know until I do a few long rides, but I suspect that I might have found my dream bike.

My gf has a 70's Mercian touring bike (diamond frame, not Mixte) that is just beautiful. It's rose pink with a blue head tube and blue band on the seat tube. I'm so jealous of that bike.
