Shimano 600 shifter question
My first vintage purchase was a vista (by araya) with shimano 600 arabesque. My second was a late 80's centurion elite with shimano 600 (just before indexing)
About a week ago, a thread came up about the brazeons for shimano 600 shifters being different enough that they can't be used with modern indexing downtube shifters. This changed my centurion plan. I had a line on cheap duraace downtube 9sp shifters, but they won't work. For now I'll run the original friction shifters with the later ultegra derailleur and modern wheels. (To the purists, this is not sacrilege. I bought this great bike as a $50 carcass without wheels and with a busted rear d.)
The first question is regarding downtube stops. If I decide to go with index barcons, will ordinary downtube stops for downtube shifter brazeons fit the shimano 600 brazeons.
The second project is the Vista. The frame is a little small and a little heavy, so I've been thinking of using it for trail-riding. I'd like to use barends for this, but don't want to lose the cool arabesque shift levers. Does anyone know if those levers will work with Rivendell's DT to barcon adaptor mounts?
Thanks to everyone for their help.

I actually prefer the friction bar end shifters. They are so easy to use, plus you have the benefit of simplicity and ease of maintenance.

yes
You've probably figured this out yourself already, but (not being aware of this issue) I replaced the downtube shifters on my late-80's Centurion Ironman Master with Dura-Ace barcons and used the standard downtube stops supplied with them. They look fine, work fine, etc.

I think that the 600 Arabesque shifters use a standard mount and so should work with the Rivendell adapters...might look a little strange, maybe that's what you're after.
Other question: if you've got the weird 600 braze-ons with the stop-tab that's part of the braze-on, you might have to do some Dremel surgery and grind the tabs down, OR maybe make slots in the DT stop bodies to fit over these tabs. What I've seen, the Shimano DT stops have a square inner shape that fits over the square body that's part of the "typical" DT boss...
