Late 1940's Carlton Fixed
Just built this up yesterday, after an extended wait for it to show up from Europe!
This was an official frameset of an Olympic British Star, in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. The frame is dated late 40's. The previous owner rode this bike on the road to the velodrome, the reasoning for drilling the rear.
I have built it up as a fun, laid back, city ride. its super comfortable, and im enjoying it thus far!
details...
Wheels: 36h 3x Campagnolo Record Pista hubs to Mavic OR10 Tubular rims, with Conti Gatorskin Sprinter tires. 19 tooth Phil Wood Cog and lockring
Cranks: Campagnolo Record Pista with 48t Campy ring (1/8th, 151 bcd)
Pedals: Campagnolo Record Pista with MKS toe Clips and MKS Double straps.
Bottom bracket: Older Phil bottom bracket with special cups to fit the Chater Lea bottom bracket shell.
Headset: Campagnolo Record
Seatpost: Campaganolo Record
Saddle: My beat up Brooks Swift
Stem: GB Spearpoint
Bars: Chopped Nitto Promenades
Chain: Izumi ESH
Hope you all enjoy

Beautiful bicycle. If that swift is beat-up, I'd hate to see your good one.

Thank you! I dont have a good brooks, its the only one own. It's got big scuffs on both sides that you cant see in the photos It's survived getting hit by a car and several rain storms.

Very cool, but why the funny bars? It would look more "period" with dropped bars and you'd still have a good riding position. What are the legalities of getting away with riding brakeless on SF streets?

Liking everthing but the bars.. whats with people chopping their handlebars like that (and other ways)? Looks hideous if you ask me.

Since we're nit-picking, it looks like your rear tubular shifted a little bit. Could be a sign you don't have it glued on well enough. If it keeps shifting, it could lead to the premature death of an expensive tire.

For sure! Looks like bunny hop stops are turning the tire. Get a front brake.
Actually, I can't see a glued tire turning. The valve may have been leaning from the start.

oldyeller - cuz they are comfy as can be. i dont really care about looking period that much, but if it matters, I have a pair of cinelli drops and badged stem in my closet. i change bars like i change underwear. I've ridden drops on the street for the last few years and am really just tired of them and find bars like these to be more practical. Also if you look at track cycles throughout history, you'll find up until the 50's and 60's there were a lot of pretty interesting handlebars out there that were raced with, my favorites being the jack lauterwasser (hope i spelled that right) bars. There is not any law regarding brakeless fixed gear bikes in SF. I don't know of anyone who has ever been stopped or harassed over it. I've even had cops come up to me and ask me about how it works, they seem to think its kind of interesting.
the rear tire is shifted a bit, good eye. I just did a poor job gluing it the first time and didnt catch it till it was dry the next morning (dont mix drinking and gluing, the combination of the two can make one a little absent minded).
I am actually on the hunt for a brake, but I havent found one yet. The only one I have doesn't reach. It's 48x19 for a reason though, control is pretty effortless. ive been riding fixed and brakeless for a couple years, i am comfortable with it.
eltewe - i like the gatorskin sprinters, they're really durable. I can get a 3-4 months of brakeless riding out of them. They are a bit harsher of a ride than the regular sprinters, but I've had bad luck with the sprinters and glass.

Cool, I need some tubs for my Casati. And skidding won't be an issue, as she'll be geared.
