Miyata 512 vintage? (T-mar?)

I owe thanks already for the stuff I’ve learned about Miyatas by searching threads on these forums. My understanding is that the 512 was a mid-range road “racing” bike, with (in this case) a triple-butted steel frame that continues to have a good reputation.

I was wondering, though, if T-Mar or anyone else could help me figure out when this bike was made. My rough guess is 1987, maybe later, but I’m not sure, since I haven’t seen a picture on the web with the same paint-scheme, etc.

Here’s a link to the ebay auction I won:
https://cgi.ebay.com/OLD-MIYATA-10-SP...QQcmdZViewItem

I just got the bike, and as I suspected, the drivetrain is a twelve-speed, not ten, as indicated in the description. The bike is in very good condition, but not pristine: there are a few scratches and scraped stickers.

wheels: Wolber super champion gentleman GTA rims laced to Sansin (?) hubs
levers and brakes: Shimano SLR (side-pull single-pivot)
derailers: Shimano “light action”
crankset: Shimano biopace 52-42
shifters: Shimano SIS index/friction switchable on the downtube
saddle: Selle Royal Futura (Possibly swapped out? Looks dirty.)

Serial # PE72158

If anyone knows anything about when this bike was made, what it sold for, or whether these are indeed original parts, I’d be happy to find out. Thanks!

I think a serial number starting with P would indicate around '88 or '89. Just be patient - I'm sure T-Mar will nail it down to within a certain week of a certain year...

Positively a 1987 model, frame manufactured in early March. All the mentioned components are original, including the saddle. Original price would have been in the range of $350-$400 US. It was a lower mid-range competiton/fitness model.

hey, i bid on that bike too. my max was just over $100 as i have more than enough bikes already (is that possible?). looks like a pretty sweet ride though, and you got a great price. my girlfriend has been riding a 512 of about the same era lately, and loves it. im still keeping my eye out for a 1000lt or a 912 in that size though. enjoy

Like the original poster, I've found some info about my bike from these forums. I'm hoping to find out a little bit more. I'm guessing early 80's.

It's a Miyata, and even that took a long time for me to figure out b/c the whole thing has been spray painted yellow (and I mean EVERYTHING -- even the chain was yellow when i got it). So I'm not sure which model. It was originally red, sort of metallic glittery, as can be seen where some of the yellow is chipped off. And it's tall, 65cm center-to-center.

Metal Headbadge on the front with an 'M' inside a cog.

Serial Number - M258554
Shimano derailleurs
Shimano friction shifters on the downtube
Sakae cranks
'Miyata Cotterless' written around the crank end caps (oh how I wish I had read that little word 'miyata' so many hours earlier....)
The kickstand (!) says 'made in u.s.a.' so i'm guessing its not original ;-)

It's currently a 10-speed, but I know for certain the rear wheel (including cassette) is not original. I can see where a couple of the decals are still below the yellow-paint, so I might remove some of the yellow to figure out which model it is.

I picked it up for $25, and I've put a couple thousand miles on it in the past year. I've just recently decided to maybe spend a few dollars and spruce it up a little.

Any info you can give me would be appreciated. Including how to remove one layer of paint without destroying the decals or bottom layer of paint.

What you have is a 1984 model 110. Miyata measured their frames ctt, so your 65cm is actually a 67cm. Such large frames were in low demand and typically were restricted to a single model, usally one or two rungs up from the bottom. In Miyata's case this was the model 110. The serial number suggests a 1984 or 1985 model, but in this case we know it's the 1984 version, as the 1985 version used a head tube decal, as opposed to an actual headbadge. The Shimano derailleurs and SR cranks are also onsistent with a 1984 model 110.

FYI, the frame is plain gauge CrMo with hi-tensile forks and stays.

Thanks for the info! though it doesn't really change much, this'll still be my primary mode of transportation. Maybe i'll give it a nicer paint job. Unfortunately I met a mal-oriented drainage grate last night and utterly destroyed my rear wheel.
