83/84 Specialized stumpjumper tubing?

Can anyone tell me what kind of frame tubing was used in a 83 or 84 Specialized stumpjumper sport? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that 1984 was the first year for the Sport version of the Stumpjumper. The specs state Special Series CrMo butted tubing but do not state a manufacturer. The 1983 Specialized frames used either Tange or Ishiwata, depending on the model. The Stumpjumper used a specially drawn, oversize , butted Tange CrMo tubeset.

I suspect the 1984 version and probably the Sport used the same tubeset but have no objective evidence to support this. If you remove the fork, there may be a stamping on the steering column to indicate whether it is Tange or Ishiwata. While it may be custom drawn, I suspect it is a version of Ishiwata MTB-D or Tange MTB.

I have 3 early 80's Stumpjumper Sports

One I bought new I think in 1984 & is currently a single speed, 2 are thrift store rescues in the project stage. The seat tube decal on my original says Special Series TOURING chrome moly. I'm almost certain it's straight gauge. The fork decal say Special Series Chrome moly. The decals on the other 2 look the same but are in pretty bad shape. The steerer on one of the projects is stamped Tange 4D.

The 83 stumpjumper & the 84 stumpjumper sport that I own have the same decal's on both & say the same as yours, Special Series Touring chrome moly. I'm petty sure its double butted tubing though. I just never knew who made the tubing.
