Star Stamped Spokes
My brother recently picked up a Miyata Team Pro and the wheel spokes are double butted and only marked with a small star on the head. Anyone have any idea what they are? The LBS had no clue.
just curious is all...

Sapim - they make the only (?) NJS approved spokes.

I'm pretty sure it's Sapim, but I'm sorta drugged up on cough syrup, decongestants, and lack of food.

Asahi has been in the spoke business in Japan for a long time and made many spokes under contract for others too, including Wheelsmith and Ritchey, I'd bet that Asahi is an NJS manufacturer (why would a Belgian brand be and not a Japanese one?). The only star brand I can think of is Stella, and I think they went out of business before Miyata Team Pros were made...are the wheels original to the bike?

2 more thots: there is another spoke brand with "star" in it : Robergel made "tres etoiles," or "three stars" and they were stainless, but also older than the Miyata, I'd think. Plus IIRC they marked the heads with 3 dots, not a single star.
NJS is only concerned with Keirin racing, the Miyata Team Pro is a road bike, n'cest pas?

Sapim mark was a tomahawk (early) or S (later).
Stella was the only star mark I could recall.

I have recently run into nice, butted stainless spokes marked with a single star on the head. This is different from the Robergel with the 3 little stars. You can get into a whole nother world just figuring out the markings on these spoke heads!

Somebody should do a little compliation of the markings on spokeheads...thanks for that info on Sapim marks. Not so sure anymore about Stella being out of business when Miyata Team pros came along, maybe not, especially if it's an early Koga Miyata it could be from the '70s.

I definately have some spokes with stars and their no way they are NJS spokes, I think I have old butted and plated spoked on a set of superbe wheels with 27" clinchers... most likely from the late 70s or very early 80s. I believe it was on the forums that I was told they are most likely stella.

I just checked the spokes on my '74 PX10 and they have an E on the end. I built them myself in about 1977. I always thought I used Robergel 3 stars and I swear I remember a triangular yellow box. They're double butted stainless. What do I have?

Yeah, I remember the "E" mark, too it actually has a little rounded bump for the middle stroke of the "E". I guess Robregel used several marks for the same spoke over the years, or maybe they designated different iterations, thanks for spelling Trois correctly, I could not. I don't know who makes the "NJS Approved" spoke with the single star, but it's a new brand and doubtless not Stella...must be Japanese.
