Lets talk about racks

Old racks. I have this front rack, which bolts to the axle, and something, I'm not sure what, around the headset. Does anyone have any idea what kind of hardware I could use to effectively (i.e. not a bolt through the tabs) secure this rack? I'm also wondering where I can get more of these front spring loaded racks, I've found rears, but no clue on these.

Kind of hard to make out from the photo, but are you sure that's a front rack and not a rear? The clamp that's behind your stem looks like the kind that attaches to the seat bolt binder.

I'm pretty sure. It was securely on the front of a bike I found that I cut up and parted, but.... I can't remember what I did with the hardware.

Likely if it is supposed to actually by a front rack, that bolt would have attached to a flat piece of metal with a hole in it. The piece would then fit under the locknut of the head set (with the steerertube going through the hole in the center).

Something kind of like this:

I just thought of something else you could try. Get an old separate seat clamp (from say an AMF or Schwinn) pass put the clamp on the stem and pass the bolt on the rack through it like you normally would for a seat clamp.

That is a great idea! Now I can carry two empty boxes... Thanks again for the help everyone, and the rack!

It looks like it was once on a Scwinn Corvette, and has been painted.

The shifter mounting flange from an old Varsity could probably be made to work, too.
