I told myself I was done building up new stuff after the Flyte was finished in early Janurary... it's now like less than 2 months later!

So then I tell myself I'm going to try my hand at wheel building. I'm currently awaiting my new set of spokes to give that a second try. The new rims for that little project arrived today. At least those look great and should be a very nice (vintage) wheelset when done. Got a thread about that in C&V for those interested.

And now I'm on this Serotta project. I was supposed to buy a bare frame and slowly pick up parts over like the next 4-5 months so it would be done about the time that the Gazelle went in for paint. So much for that plan. I'm looking at having all the parts polished, prepared and ready when the frame gets back from paint in 6-8 weeks. Hopefully by then the weather will be good enough that I'll want to use all my extra free moments actually on the bike, either on the road or on the trainer at night.

Did I mention it was 76 degrees out today? Had an exam that took up the best riding time of the day, but did get out for a short ride on the Flyte. Tomorrow I want to get the Gazelle out for a longer ride but I have more studying to do. Uhg, so ready for spring break and day light savings time to kick in so I get an extra hour of light in the evening after work!

Why does this bike say Parkpre on it?

Ah, good question that I neglected to fully explain in the original post(s). The bike was purchased in 86 by the original owner who went on to have a sports nutrition store or something, and became associated with a woman's cycling team in the late 80's or early 90's. He didn't race for the team (obviously as it was a woman's team for what I understand), but decided that he wanted to have his personal bike painted to match the team's bikes, which were supplied by Parkpre bicycles. And so, the Parkpre Serotta was born. Its not quite as nice as the Masi that was found under a Gazelle paintjob. But still, this is going to be a great ride when this project is done.

So, metallic red with silver decals, Rolls saddle, Cinelli front end with black cork wrap. Maybe some braided silver derailleur and brake housing? Or stick with the traditional black?

Ok, frame was dropped off at southwest frameworks this morning. David and I had a nice chat about the plans for the bike, and the best news of the day is that the job should be done in maybe 3-4 weeks! Woot! I got back to the apartment and was going to take a ride, but the wife called with the news that her car has two flats and she was waiting on AAA. So deciding that it was best that I stick near the apartment while that gets taken care of I decided to do some component polishing! Which means more pictures.

(Before Polishing)

top to bottom: unpolished shift lever, polished shift lever, polished front derailleur.

front derailleur with the band all polished up and looking nice now!

Rear derailleur didn't need much more than just a spray down with some simple green and a quick wipe.

To answer Marty's question (and anyone else wondering) I've been polishing with Mother's Aluminum & Mag Polish that I picked up in the automotive section of Walmart along with a felt pad on the dremel. Cover the area with polish on a rag, fire up the dremel and go at it. First go over everything gets a dark glaze from the first go around, then second time over the area the dark glaze polishes away leaving the shine.

Last thing I did tonight was put the original Campagnolo crank ring back on the crank arm and clean both rings. Rings show some wear, but should have plenty of life left.

First of the new parts ordered. Unless the forumer owner of the Serotta finds the Super Record brake levers I've decided to go with my trusted Tektro R200A levers. This pair though I'm going to polish the Tektro name off of the levers. This will keep the slightly updated clean aero look up front that I like. I have decided to go with braided silver housings for the brakes and the short loop at the rear derailleur.

So I ordered the brake levers, SRAM PC-58 chain and silver aluminum bottle cages. Next orders will include be cables & housings, new bearings, rear axle, brake pads and perhaps an extra freewheel for when I know the hills are going to be bigger than what me and a 42/21 can handle.

edit: I just polished the Tektro name off of the levers on my Gazelle. Looks good.

Horray for more photos!

This time we have some of the freewheels I've picked up for this little project:

First the Shimano Dura-Ace 7sp 12-21 that was on the Campy rear hub when I picked up the shimano. I've cleaned it some, but still could use another round of clean up:

Next is the 7sp Regina Extra 13-21 I just picked up from BF member monogodo, with a phil wood Regina remover:

And finally finally the 6sp Regina CX / CX-S 13-21, part of the new lot of parts I picked up from the former owner of the Serotta. I'll likely put this one up for trade since I'd like to stick with 7sp blocks on the Serotta so I'm not having to readjust the cable stops during wheel changes.

I've got more photos of what else I picked up from him today coming in another post in a few minutes...

My "Bike Corner" of the study is not becoming over run with wheels, tires, rims and such! Right now, between the Serotta project, and the Barracuda Mk.I's new wheelset I have the following loose wheels and rims right now:

2x Araya 27x1 NOS rims - Barracuda Mk.I rims to be laced to Shimano HF hubs
2x Silver (one Araya "Red") 32h tubular rims, both have tubular tires on them.
1x Mavic MA-2 rim laced to a Shimano Exage hub, 7sp cassette.
1x Mavic Open S.U.P. SBP rim laced to Record front hub.
1x Mavic GP4 tubular rim laced to Campagnolo Rear hub. Rim has fairly deep grooves in braking surface
1x Campagnolo Record Pave tubular rim laced to Campagnolo front hub. Braking surface looks nearly new.

Toss in a few spare tubular tires and a pair of 27x1 1/8" tires off the Cuda and I've got a lot of loose loops hanging out! Here's a few photos of all of it:

mixed clincher wheelset (ends) and tubular rims w/ tires (middle)

Mavic Open S.U.P. rim - anyone got any info on this one?

Mavic MA-2 rim, laced to the Shimano hub.

Tubular set of dark annodized rims. Both hubs polished up nicely.

The rest of the wheel photos can be seen here, a before & after polishing set.

All the small parts (including a new rear axle set including spacers and cones) ordered from loosescrews.com this morning. The new axle set was the largest part of that order by far, but I opted to get the set with the new cones instead of reusing the old cones since I wasn't sure how long they had been run while the axle was broken. At least one of the cones showed some uneven bearing wear marks which would have probably caused some roughness when the hub was put back together with a new axle. I also ordered new bearings for all the hubs. I'll have lots of fun in the next week or so repacking hubs with new grease and bearings.

The levers, chain and bottle cages have shipped from JensonUSA, and the new handlebars I will be using also arrived in the mail from a fellow BF member yesterday. Levers as mentioned previously are going to be the Tektro R200A, and haven't decided between a Cinelli model 66 deep drop, or the model 64 shallow drop bar yet. Here's what my Barracuda Mk.I looks like with the deep drop bar and the same Tektro levers:

(ignore the fact that the saddle nose is way down in that picture, it was taken very shortly after I built that bike a year and a half ago and hadn't dialed everything in yet. )

I'm still in need of a stem, but not sure what length I need as I failed to measure the top tube of the frame before sending it off to paint. And a seatpost. I sold the black American Classic post that was on the bike when I bought it, and now searching for a more suitable replacement. I have a decent fluted SR post in the Gazelle I'm considering using on the Serotta and getting a more modern Campagnolo Centaur post for the Gazelle to continue its slow transformation to a modern campy setup, but the supply of those have suddenly dried up on ebay. And the vintage campagnolo posts are getting expensive even for the less than mint condition ones.

If you have the serial number kicking around, you can e-mail Serotta and they will tell you all the specifics.

Is that my Nova Special you have up there? The blue with yellow and red decals?!

You'll hate mine. Mine's all DA 10 and carbon-outfitted now. My own anachronism.

oopfoo - I picked that picture up off a completed ebay auction that I found via a google search. It will be interesting to see how I like this frame over the long term. I have plans to turn one of my vintage steel frames into a modern build. The current plan is to use the Gazelle, but something in the back of my head is thinking that the Serotta may look better dressed in the modern (Campagnolo) equippment.

jeh - had it written down somewhere but not sure yet. It had a 130mm stem on it when I bought it and knew that was a bit long so I'll either be dropping down to a 120 or 110.

JensonUSA order arrived today. Levers, chain and bottle cages just as suspected. Nothing too impressive there. But all needed.

Decided I am going to give the bar and stem a mirror polish by removing the anodizing and breaking out the mother's aluminum polish again. So far I have one side of the Cinelli handlebar that I am currently planning on using. More upkeep to keep the shine in the long run, but so far it's been worth it. Agree?

Seatpost arrived today, at least the one I'll be using for the time being. I still would love to pick up a Campagnolo Super Record fluted post. But this is a pretty nice post for the bike as well. I won't tell you that it's actually a Shimano post... oh wait, I just did. (And no comments about the saddle position in the first pic. I won't be using that saddle so I just wanted to test fit it.)

One step closer...

The rear wheel is put back together now. My parts order from loosescrews arrived on Monday which included the new rear axle and cones as well as two bags of bearings for servicing lots of campagnolo hubs.

Right now I think the only parts I'm short to have a functional bike is the stem and a pair of pedals. The pedals I can grab off one of the other bikes for the time being (my SPD's are already off the 'Cuda atm) but a stem is somewhat required.

I actually think I have it all now, other than the bar tape which I'm waiting for my LBS to get a new stock of. Oh, and new brake pads for the Campagnolo brakes. Going to get some of the KoolStop pads that fit the original holders.

I want to thank all of the BF members who have helped in one way or another to help me locate the parts I needed to restore the Serotta. Be sure that there are many many more photos on their way as soon as more of the parts arrive, and of course the frame gets finished at Southwest Frameworks. Right now, this is how the build looks to be shaping up:

Frame: 1986 Serotta Nova, 58cm. Color: Lexus Matador Red Mica, Silver w/ charcoal decals.
Group: Campagnolo Super Record, complete minus pedals & brake levers
Brake Levers: Tektro R200A Aero levers, Campagnolo shape.
Saddle: either San Marco Rolls or Selle Italia Flite
Stem: 110mm Cinelli XA
Bars: 42cm Cinelli (deep drop or shallow, undetermined yet)
Cable housing: Braided Silver from velo-orange
Pedals: LOOK Keo Sprint, Charcoal color
Wheels: Campagnolo hubs, laced to Campagnolo Record Pave (front) and GEL330 (rear), Conti Giro tubulars
Wheels(2): Campagnolo hubs, laced to Campagnolo clincher rims, Vittoria Rubino Pro tires

I think that covers it. I can't wait to see the frame all done, hopefully will be another 7 to 10 days.

I should have the frame back from David on either Monday evening or Tuesday morning. Just in time for my last 2 weeks of school for the semester, which means I may not be able to get everything put together for a few more weeks, but I'll be sure to at least get photos of the frame posted asap.

I know I've said this before... but it should be done... soon. Unforunately I'm gonig in for more minor surgery that will have me down for a few days later this week. However as soon as I can walk and talk my wife into driving, I'll be picking it up.
