Mystery Peugeot
I spotted a Peugeot at the thrift store which I found intriguing, but decided not to buy. But I may change my mind if anybody has something good to say about it.
I did not see a model name or number anywhere on the bike, just some Peugeot decals. The frame was unlugged, but the bike had alloy stem, bars, seat post. It had a heliomatic rear hub and simplex derailleurs, they appeared to be all metal and not plastic. The wheels were steel though.
They only wanted $19 for it so I may go back and get it regardless, but does anybody have any idea what model this could be? Or it's approximate age?

I had a Peugeot back in the late fifties or early seventies. I consider it the worst bike I had ever owned. Since 1945 I have owned six or seven bikes.

Well, I'd guess it "Could" be a P8 or PH10S/L or a PH12, it's really hard to say. Probably early-mid 80's It's worth a $20. Buy it so we can see pictures!!

I think your idea that is was a PH10 is probably right, I remember it had a 103 tubing sticker and sidepull brakes.

If it was unlugged and sidepulls and a PH10, the fork should be Carbolite, and the frame HLE. Was it rainbow decals and painted forks? A PH10 would have alloy wheels as well, IIRC. Even my lowly P8 has alloys? Could be a P14, I have one with sidepulls and steel wheels.,,,,BD
Check by the cranks on the left chainstay, or under the cranks on the BB. There should be a paper tag with the model number.

The unlugged frame strongly suggests plain carbon steel "Carbolite 103." A seatpost with an expanding nut (like a handlebar stem) instead of a binder bolt would further confirm this.

An unlugged frame suggests nothing really. Peugeot moved away from external lugs in the early/mid eighties? I have three Peugeots and one is a PH10. NONE of them have expanding seatposts or external lugs. They also all have binder bolts. Not sure when they used those, but unless I'm mistaken none of their bikes had that feature in the eighties? Maybe this is a seventies model, The production period of Helicomatic would tell for sure.,,,,BD

Well it was gone today. I had just not seen a peugeot like this one before. the only other detail I can recall about it was that the fork crown was not flat across the top, it angled downwards. The speculation was fun anyway, but I guess one Gitane is already enough French bikes for me.

Sounds like a P series of some type, lol. All three of my eighties Peugeots have the sloping fork crown. Two of them I can only guess are plain steel, for only the 10 has the carbolite decal on the upper fork. Steel rims though, hmmm. Oh well, all speculation now.,,,,BD

Do the serial numbers on these bikes mean anything like the Schwinn numbers do? Do they contain the manufacture date, place or anything like that?
