A little help dating vintage Peugeot
A good friend of mine that is a manager of a local bike shop called me yesterday wondering if I was interested in taking an old Peugeot off his hands that a customer left in his shop after deciding it wasn't worth putting the money in to fix it up. I said of course I was and am now trying to figure out exactly what it is. Judging from the components and paint I think it is a UO-8 from the late sixties or early seventies. It has simplex shifters, deraillers and quick releases, normandy hubs with rigida dimpled wheels, and mafac brakes and levers. The confusing part for me is the six digit serial number stamped onto the rear dropout that is 607562. I cannot find any info that gives me dates of manufacture according to serial numbers on Peugeots. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Peugeot UO8
Greetings,
Any chance there is a serial number on the underside of the bottom bracket, probably on a metal plate if it hasn't fallen off leaving two holes? If there is, it is probably 7 digits long, the first of which may indicate its year (e.g., 3...#s = 1973). Sometimes the rims or the back of the derailleur have two digits indicating their date (e.g., 73 = 1973), although these may not match-up exactly with the frame date. Also, visit https://www.retropeugeot.com/ to get some information on this UO-8.
Cheers,

I have a similar white Peugeot, same components, lugs, decals. Serial number on the right rear dropout is 4-digit! with no sign of there having been a plate on the bb.

I would say somewhere around 71-3, based on a number of factors.
1) Decal set is from that period
2) Downtube shifters, this model moved to stem shifters about 1974
3) Earlier ones (not many!) I have seen have lugs painted black.
The serial number trick does not work for Peugeots of this age. I have several I have nailed down the exact year of manufacture, and the serial number has no relation to manufacture date. For example, I have what is clearly a 1973 PX10E, and the serial number would indicate the bike was built in 1976 using that method. I can date it definitively because I possess the original reciept.

The holes are 2mm in diameter and are approximately 26mm apart. While measuring I also noticed 1 stamped very faintly into the BB. This picture should show what I am talking about.

Where was this bike purchased? Back in the day the LBS I worked at stamped all of our bikes with date codes on the BB shell. We used a large font stamp for the year and a smaller font for the month. Is there a smaller font stamp next to the '1' and is the '1' stamp painted over?

I have no idea where the bike was originally purchased. I never met the previous owner because he just ditched the bike at the LBS when he heard how much they were going to charge to fix it. Luckily for me a good friend of mine is the manager of that bike shop and called me first to see if I wanted it. All it needed was a few new spokes, bar tape tires/tubes, and cables. As far as I can tell everything else is actually from the factory and working great. But no there are no other numbers stamped on the BB shell and yes the 1 is painted over.

I got from one of my hometown local shops just outside of San Francisco but there are no store decals to be found.
