Our middle daughter (we have 3) got married this past weekend, and my English son-in-law's Dad was over here for the wedding. He's a cyclist, so we had a couple of nice rides. Here's a shot of the two of us on my '73 SS (yellow, ridden by yours truly) and my '74 Continental (purchased new by me in June of '74). Both bikes got new tires, tubes and a tuneup this Winter, and they ride like Cadillacs.

I pointed out that, when I was a kid, we called these bikes "English Racers". Steve said that they just called them "racers"

Great story. Thanks for posting, and best wishes to the newlyweds. A few C&V guys claim they would never want to buy a Schwinn, but they do not know what they are missing. Those two bikes will probably be running long after most of their contemporaries have succumbed to broken frames and/or cranks.

I know from experience that it is great fun to ride one of your own bikes with a visitor who is riding another bike from your collection. (RainmanP borrowed my PKN-10E several years ago, during a 1-week visit to San Diego, and we enjoyed a nice tour of Torrey Pines and UCSD.)

Hey guys-

There are a number of ways this thread could go- vintage bikes, wedding, daughters, etc. To take it in the direction of remarks about anyone's physical appearance is, well, juvenile. Of course I'd like to lose a few lbs.- that's why I'm on the bloomin' bike. I think this is offensive, and I'd suggest that self-restraint might be a virtue worth cultivating.

It's quite possible that mine was the comment in question. I'm sorry if it offended anyone. being a little insecure about issues such as weight myself, I try to make jokes. it's quite often that I will say (as a joke) are you calling me fat? when someone makes a comment like yours that is unrelated to the topic. it's a way for me to deal and joke about my insecurities and have a little fun with it.

I think there's a lot of us on this forum who carry a few extra pounds - I'm 6'2 and around 250. Don't take it to heart.

I still enjoy my old Schwinn Voyageur (1980, IIRC), though it's seen better days

Don't know why, but I consistently am about five miles an hour slower on the flats on my Schwinn roadie than I am on my modern bike. It's still good fun, and I use it for errands and the like.

I ain't sayin' nuthin' about weight. I used to be thin. I also used to be young! Never was good looking. Both years and pounds go on a lot easier than they go off.

I have found a motivator... I will post this pic on my refrigerator and at least occasionally get on the bike instead of opening the fridge.

I have gained 30 pounds or so this winter, so a current picture I would be even bigger.

I have a goal of losing at least 80 pounds this year, and hopefully 100...

BTW - on the topic of vintage riders on vintage bikes, there are a couple of "Covered Bridge" organized rides in Pennsylvania, and either one would be nice on vintage bikes. The one in Lancaster (where I trailed behind some members of the road forum last year) is August 19th and the one in Bucks (where Orange Okie and I attacked the course and took the preceding picture) is October 14th.

Anyone up for meeting up to ride a metric at either of these? Or a shorter course?

Vintage bikes, vintage bridges and vintage (or non-vintage) riders.

We'll definitely have to get together. I assumed you would be back in Oklahoma by now... This time maybe I'll keep up with you rather than catching up with you when you decide to stop and wait.

This year I'll be riding vintage. Probably my early 70's Sears bike (with updates) for the frst ride, and if I am really successful, I hope I'll be light enough to ride my Centurion Ironman Master by October... I will probably keep it pretty stock.

I am hoping to have my first ride of the season this weekend to start my journey.

I doubt my father in law will get on a bike, my wedding day or not. I tried to convince my Fiancee to use our tandem as our "get away vehicle" complete with just married sign and tin cans. she won't go for it though. she's afraid of ruining her dress.
