Araya road frame
As promised, my newly built up Araya road frame converted to fixed gear. The frame looks to be original black paint with sticker logo on the downtube, white lugs (anyone recognize the lug manufacture?) It had a made in Japan sticker, gold and very faded, on the bottom of the seat tube that I removed. It's heavier than my modern Lemond steel road frame (the brakes and components are pretty big/sturdy/heavy). It had on it the Will stem, Will Kusuki bars (which you can't see in the picture, but they have round bends near the stem attach point and at first it looked from a crash but is probably supposed to be like that), SR seatpost, Panmax seat, Diacompe brakes which aren't compatible with the new wheels, and Diacompe brake levers with nice looking red circles on the sides.
The frame is very comfortable on city streets but it'll have different bars, levers and brakes soon as the current setup just doens't stop fast enough for emergency braking.
Anyone want to chime in with their experience with Araya frames? In any case, the bike is my first complete build-up and has been a great project.
Cheers, Alan

Chime in.. not much to say other than it seems too nice to convert it to a fixie,Araya made rims I know that. First mention of bikes I can recall. Seems a shame, find a bike with bad/no components to condemn as a fixie(oppinion)

The parts that came with it originally from the Salvation Army I've still got...I made one ride on it in geared form before parking it and doing the conversion. It still has the downtube brazeons which I'm not going to remove, can't butcher it that much (and don't want to repaint and lose the nice chrome sticker). It had (surprise!) Araya 27" rims, 10 speed drivetrain, Suntour/Diacompe derailleurs, cheapie plastic Diacompe bar end shifters which I absolutely detested from the start as my knees are too close to them.
The fork is definitely chrome farther up the legs but I'm still afraid to remove the paint for fear of damaging the chrome and farking it up.
Ah and yes it is going to always have brakes on it

Also has MKS #11 pedals, KKT clips that had leather shoe protectors which I'm going to replace w/ Velo Orange leather. There is zero info on those pedals on google or BF, they're very wide touring clips that fit a size 12 and up foot. There was another big dude riding this based on the grooves in the straps.

Apparently, Araya also branded mtb frames made from Ishiwata:

I'll bet your frame rides nice.

You can greatly improve the effectiveness of your brakes by replacing the pads with KoolStops and by replacing the housings with modern low-compression tubing. Aero brake handles will boost your leverage about 10%. Dual-pivot sidepulls MAY perform marginally better than your centerpulls; single-pivot sidepulls will not.

Araya still makes bike, I don't think anyone is importing them, they make a beautiful randonneur I was checking out the other day on a Japanese site. VO is working to maybe import them or something similar.

I recently picked up a 'Vista Elite' frame and fork at a bike swap meet back in February that I am in the process of building up now. The frame and fork were made by Araya of cro-moly steel and the frame is relatively light, not like many of the heavy, low end steel frames. The frame is black with gold accents around the lugs, and gold decals that spell out 'Vista Elite' on the top tube. The headbadge is aluminum and says 'Vista'. I don't know too much more about the frame, but it's getting a Shimano 'Dura Ace' 7400 series set of components (6-speed freewheel x 2 chainrings). I also found a pair of beautiful 27" Araya rims laced to Normandy high flange hubs that look very nice with the new gum sidewall tires.
