Sugino Cyclone MKII vs. Deore LX
(I previously posted this on the touring forum without luck-sorry for the cross posting.)
I've two bikes I've purchased used a 1984 Trek 520 and a Mid80s CDale (not sure of the actual model number but the components are LX.)
Both are canti and given the dislike of the Helico Matic hubs on the Trek I've already swapped it with the LX wheelset that was on the CDale.
The question I have is should I (or would you) swap the rest of the LX components from the CDale onto the Trek (which is the bike I want to keep for touring.) I'm really not sure if I even plan to keep the CDale.
The Trek for the most park is Sugino Cyclone MKII. (Although I've already replaced the downtube shifters with thumbshifters.)
The other part of my concern is that the new(old) LX wheelset is 7 speed and the old Helico Matic wheelset was 6 speed.
Thanks, Scott

I didn't think Shimano LX came out until about 1990. Regardless, Suntour Cyclone MKII is very nice, nicer than Shimano LX in my opinion. I've got an old mountain bike equipped with LX components, they've always worked great, heavy and robust. But the Cyclone MKII would definitely be more fitting for your Trek in my opinion-

Depends on your setup. Is the MKII a GT? What's the lowest gear on your LX cassette? Are you running a triple up front, or double? Was the CDale running a triple up front?
FWIW, I attempted a Cyclone MKII GT on an 8 speed cassette, and it didn't have enough travel to shift to the low gear. My guess is that the GT would work on a 7 speed cassette. Also, the GT will take up to a 34T low gear, according to Sheldon Brown.
I'm not sure about the Cyclone MKII short cage.

Suntour all the way . . . no question. Who needs more than 7 cogs? ;>)
