You could, but it'll get real dark, and may soften too much.

Yeah, I have the matching tape for my Swift, and I don't think I'd proofide the tape at ALL.

I don't think I would buy the tapes, it's so expensive and I like the look of sticked elkhide better.

The light brown (honey?) tape fades VERY quickly and quickly detracts from the overall look of the bike https://www.chainringtransitauthority..._hendren.shtml ...The darker brown and black retains the colour excellently. If you want the honey I'd recommend some sort of leather care. But you can't beat a matching Brooks saddle and tape combo. Or can you? I quote DEVO: The strongest will survive yet the unfit may live.

CTA will also be producing a leather bar tape that will be of the same quality at a fraction of the price. Stay tuned.

I got the light brown Brooks tape to match my honey B17 Champion Special. Even with proofide it fades immediately and looks horrible. I wouldn't recommend the Brooks bar tape to anyone for any use at any price.

Hmmm....maybe it's just me, but I don't think it looks horrible in those links. Leather under the palms will wear and discolor--ever seen leather tennis racquet or golf grips--and it looks simply USED. Cycling is about riding, don't make it simply a collector's hobby. Buy what you like.

I'm wondering if you could get a similar effect from just buying some strips of appropriately sized leather? I don't know much about buying leather, but it seems like it would be way cheaper.

It seems they have changed the tape from that seen in the pic you cited. I just got some for the Fuji...it's perforated, comes with cloth tape and nice cork plugs - much different than what I have seen on some other bikes. Pics to come.

I ordered the brown tape last year & it still looks great after a season of use. It darkened some where it got dirty, I havn't decided how to clean yet. My tape went with a maroon Brooks & turned out to be a good match as it has a maroon tint. Possibly they sent me Cardovan instead of Brown? In another post, somebody described buying an old leather jacket at the Goodwill & cutting it up into strips for good leather bar tape at a low cost. I have been meaning to try this. Don

I think the tape in the pics on that link looks fabulous! Maybe I just don't get it!

I've done it before...I should've taken pictures. It doesn't look nearly as clean because you've got multiple short pieces, but you can't beat the price. I suppose if I were to do it again I'd sew the strips together at the ends to make one long piece.

I've had the Brooks tape in antique brown on my Nishiki for a couple of months now and I love it. It has faded slightly but I love the way it looks and feels. It doesn't match my saddle exactly (which is also antique brown) but it's close enough. I don't know if all Brooks tape is like this, but mine had two sewn seams on each strip and I had to be careful not to pull it too tightly when I got to those points along the tape while wrapping. It felt like it would seperate if I had tugged on it like I normally do with cork. Other than that I don't regret shelling out the money at all. I put a very tiny amount of Proofide on mine every now and then. Not sure if it does anything good or bad, though.

My tape has the sewn seams also, I fiddled with my wrap until I got them positioned under the bar where they dont show.
