Double 85 Masi 3V renovation for a modern drivetrain

Hello All,
I'm just starting to plan this project. I've got two Masi 3V's from 85. I want to be able to put modern groupos on one or both. They are spaced for a six speed freewheel currently. So...I will need to space the rear triangle to the modern dimension. Can anyone tell me If this will be a problem? Has anyone else on this board done this? What possible problems might I encounter? What things should I think about before doing this. I was thinking about having CyclArt, Inc. in Vista CA do the job. Any recommendations?

Steel frames? No problem to either cold set it or to just spring it every time you put the wheel in. See Sheldon's page: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/frame-spacing.html .

Agree with above. No problem to do it, though some will advise against. Many good shops can do it and I'd look around as CyclArt has a rep for being pricey. After the triangle is done the rest of the stuff will bolt on.

Are you modernizing both? They're your bikes but as you are the lucky possessor of two Masis why not fit one out with retro Campy and one with new? Seems you could have your cake and eat it.

Yes, I'll be considering restoring one and renovating (modernizing) the other. I'm not into classic bikes but it would be a pity to give up the opportunity to have a restored bicycle.

I think though that the restored bike would not have the monetary value of what it would cost to restore it. I think that the value of having a restored bike would be in the mind. For example, it may cost 2000 or more for a full restoration and the bike may be worth only 2500 when complete.

Its not old enough to be considered classic at this time but in another 25 years it will be. So perhaps you're right, Maybe now is the time to build one as restored and then save it for the future. Anyway, I never want to sell either of them. But if I restore one, I may never ride it due to wanting it to hold its value.

Unless it needs an awful lot of work or you insist on NOS for every part I think you can come in for well under $2K. In fact, new modern might prove to be more costly.

The future is impossible to predict but I think there'll always be a market for clean 80s Masis.

'85 is an interesting year for Volumetricas, the frames I have seen are from Italy, from Alberto, at this point in time it looks like Masi USA had come to terms with Masi Italy and started to import them. The estimate being batted about for restoration is probably high, my guess its for new paint and chrome...components would be Super Record, that vintage is reasonably avail. unless you want true NOS parts, then prices can climb rapidly.

A word about Cyclart, they can do good work... but... be explicit in what you are going to have them do, how it is to be done, and what you are not going to have them do prior to starting work. The estimate sheet they use leaves room for a big change in price, read the fine print, I would work only with a not to exceed cost, and I would do this stuff in person.

bates-lee.com used to have a terrific explainer on what he did on a Masi restoration, but the previous link has stopped working, it was through the classicrendezvous site in the USA Masi page. I have not tried, but possibly through an archived web page vault...
